It is an evolution of Tomb Raider that tries to develop the mechanics from their chunky cinematic platformer origins to something more fluid but still difficult to control, a high skill ceiling. If you manage to wrangle the main character with enough runway he will accelerate seemingly without limit. He sort of feels like the platforming human version of driving a Warthog. The theme is pirates but with a vaguely orientalist mishmash over top that reminds me of like French comics for some reason. It is the best game on the xbox.
yes absolutely; everyone and everything is kinda ugly and wonky.
most of the levels are like three hours long and itâs incredible
I had just assumed it was french. If its not dont tell me
this is the latest game from tony gard (director of galleon).
lmao. seems promising. Iâll add it to the list.
That site is terrible for anything but completely mainstream shit. nobody plays or reviews anything weird on there seriously
otogi ruled. maybe the most 7/10 videogame ever made. absolutely abysmal last boss, as is tradition.
hiding health (and extremely useful items) behind arbitrary mission objectives (clear time, kill count, etc) is, imo, kinda terrible, and if i didnât have someone w a wiki open next to me sayin âhey u maybe wanna try clearing that level in under a minute; thereâs a really useful rewardâ then i would probably have had a much much worse time on the final boss (and in general). as it stands, i used the fury pin, or whatever itâs called, and glass-cannon-ed my way through him.
much like gunvalk, this game relies very heavily on inputs which i would describe as physically inadvisable. specifically: the bumper/trigger + attack (at the same time) in order to do the mid-air attack jump thing (marth up-B); very unkind on my hands (especially since you canât buffer it! you have to mash!). but given that the rest of the game is so easy, and the spectacle is so fun and silly, and atmosphere is so good, and oh my god the music holy shit the music dude jesus christ what a fuckn achievement, it ends up being like, great to just be in.
both these games have really made me think hard about what it is that i actually like in videogames, and how i want this to inform my own design going forward. like, neither of gunvalk nor otogi are âgoodâ but like, there are times when they work; when the things theyâre asking of you are easy, and it no longer matters that the controls are âbadâ and the camera is âbadâ and the encounters are âbadâ and so on. itâs just a cool thing to experience. the âchallengeâ kinda just boils down to being patient, and not getting tilted by âpoorâ (rushed, inexperienced, etc) game design decisionsâŚ
âŚ
actually upon reflection i think the answer is: âi will put up with a lot if the music is life-alteringly good.â
otogi 2 coming soonâŚ
Then consider inputting these on The Duke.
Same!! Conversely, Iâll stop playing games if the music and sound design is bad, even if the game is really good. Though I havenât really run into the combination of âreally good game + bad music or sound designâ
yeah actually i had wondered whether this was an artifact of being built for a mildly divergent-from-the-contemporary controller, which was why i booted up gunvalk on the real deal when i had the chance. that was using the second-gen(?) xbox controllers, and i definitely felt that the sticks required much less pressure to activate (compared to my ps3 battlefield controller which i play everything on pc with, lol), which helped reduce the strain a bit. but idk what an original loaf would be like. not sure if iâve even ever used one actually.
i actually just played kane and lynch 2 the other day, and was reminded that specifically the gun audio in that game is like, abysmally limp. it feels very out of place compared to how high the production quality is everywhere else in that game. there are probably other examples but that one was just top of mind.
In my case, I hated the sound design and music of Golf Story so much, I quit the game and deleted it after playing it for a few minutes despite getting it at full price (cry). The combination of hyper realistic sounds + intensely boring music with realistic instruments vs the very retro-style pixel art just ruined everything for me. Pick one or the other!!! I tried playing it with the music off because the boring music annoyed me, but then the super realistic sounds annoyed me even more, and before I knew it, I had deleted it.
I also deleted Sonic Superstars in the same way, though I got a few levels in. The SFX were fine but I couldnât stand the soundtrack; every other song was so boring but it also drove me insane how so some key ones like the menu and special stage were just really short nothing loops that you hear constantly but itâs just nothing, no hook, nothing catchy, just vaguely sonic sounding fluff?? Also the game looked awful on the Switch and played even worse in multiplayer so it left a terrible impression on me. Iâve been meaning to get it on PC and mod the music out so I can actually play it to see if my experience changes though.
Anyway, I wish every game had banger soundtracks and sfx.
Felt this way about sequels to Yoshiâs Island Iâve played over the years. Forget the exact titles, but they tried so hard to recreate the visual style of the original but completely missed the mark on the energy and identity of the music.
The Picross 3D on the 3DS also lacks the unique aural (and visual) energy of its predecessor on DS.
in what started as a cry for help (iâm fine), i have begun playing chaos legion again (iâm fine).
nobody in my household has appreciated this (boo~).
it is, admittedly, a cacophonous and ugly object, and i think some people find it vicariously distressing â having not developed the square-pusherâs taste for punishment.
after my first session i was feeling pretty cool on it. this was exacerbated by my having set the difficulty to easy and yet finding that the enemies where still eye-wateringly spongy and could still kill me very fast.
but i persisted and this morning defeated a boss that iâd definitely not made it to last time (big cocoon thing) which, upon also looking at the howlongtobeat, confirmed for me my suspicion that i hadnât actually played very far all those years ago, and had tossed this blurry lumpy gem aside in youthful petulance.
anyway i canât wait for the game to be like um lol you chose easy so you get the bad ending lmao
Heads up I found this very game very playable in The Japan Version so it is very possible they fucked with it.
Relevant to this thread I am making a point of playing Onimusha Dawn of Dreams Japan version because the international releases increased boss health 4 times what it was originally.
from the chaos legion fandom wiki:
A Note on difficulty: The English version is a lot harder than the Japanese, this makes English hard its own difficulty essentially in comparison super hard. In the Japanese version enemies hit you for far less damage and have less health. The Japanese version also has far less xp needed to level up around about a third to fifth depending on legion in comparison to the English release. Overall itâs much easier on top of easier enemy placement lessening in some places and some not existing in Jp i.e. no metal zombies. some bosses also have less health bars than English. and has a higher cap on items per difficulty(normal = jp hard item cap). The metal vs flesh system in jp is also far less brutal due to the decreased hp. some enemies dont respawn on the jp version.
funnily enough when i was looking for a game to play the two i choose between were this and onimusha dawn of dreams! i canât catch a break!
also yeah turns out that u donât unlock the other playable character if u play on easy lolllll
Thatâs messed up.
