I started reading Cat-Eyed Boy this week for the first time. Umezz sure didn’t shy away from the animal cruelty, did he? But I guess that isn’t too surprising after all the children who die in Drifting Classroom. The monster drawings are great, which I guess also shouldn’t be surprising.
I remember reading a while back that he’d been working on some long-term manga project in recent years. I wonder what came of that.

Once read a post declaring Umezu the greatest ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME cartoonist of all times and I agree with that, I’ve spent years since envious of that, I think that’s the maybe greatest thing an artist can be, I wish I could remember who said that originally, everyone should read Drifting Classroom and Orochi and all that other wild shit he did, def the brest.
Wait I just googled “kazuo umezu all caps all the time” and it was maybe Ryan Holmberg in a comment on the samehat blog, without declaring Umezu “the greatest”. But he was and I don’t think many people would argue with me about that.
Remember when I walked by his house, that was cool.

Been reading a few things recently. I finished the first four volumes of Skybound’s new Energon Univerrse. Transformers vol 1, Void Rivals vol 1, Cobra Commander vol 1, and Duke vol 1. It’s a really fun time it hasn’t reached the highs of More Than Meets The Eye/Lost Light aka the best Transformers comic of all time and my favorite comic of all time. But it’s probably the 2nd best take on this universe in comics. I’m really enjoying its reluctant general and protector of all life take on Optimus in particular which is to be honest so much better than the warrior king take of IDW. I’ve also been reading Dandadan which is delightfully wild and fun. As well as the first volume of The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All, which is a very cute lesbian manga I’m quite enjoying.

this is about an adult man who feels he has fucked up his entire life waking up one morning to relive his middle school years except now he’s a girl. a lot of variations of this kinda thing these days for some reason
it’s kind of a depressing comedy about him/her deciding this is the moment to lose virginity, even if it’s in a less than preferable way, and we’ll get to see several horrible and embarassing schemes never bear fruit. any fantasies she might have of success are constantly thwarted either by the kindness and responsibility of everyone else, or her friends intervening to save her.
so uh, this is very much a comic that is very not ok tho in that sense? or like, i dunno, you do the moral arithmetic of all this shit. i’m here for one particular thing anyway, and it’s the absolute self-loathing
girl hates herself so much, like wow, i’m sure i’ve never said almost exactly the same thing as below about myself (i have)
a lot of the non-comedy is basically every friend she makes asking her to please have some self-respect and take care of herself. even her family cares, but she’s not receptive to any of it.
every once in a while her understanding of others grows but she’s still in this hole. she’s so warped from years of neet incel mindset she even refuses to admit she could ever fall in love, much less be loved
i really don’t know if it’s good but i gotta know how this girl is doing and it’s been like a month since the last update and i haven’t stopped thinking about it

I think that Jimmy Olsen collection doesn’t have the Don Rickles issues. At least the print version didn’t when I was flipping through it a couple months back.
Oh nevermind, it just skips one issue and it’s a non-Kirby Kandar story.
