These guys are trump fans now IIRC?
i don’t know about specific creators, but antarctic press have put out a lot of garbage like steampunk palin, the tremendous trump: world war t, and so on.
however, they did refuse to publish some comicsgate nazi’s tripe a cuople of years ago too.
i read maiden railways the other night, and it was really nice, and since most of my recent manga purchases/current shopping list is made up of fancy hardbacks of stuff from the 70s and 80s (lupin iii, fist of the north star, goranger, kamen rider), i decided to look up the publsiher. i just had a hunch they’d have an interesting line of of interesting stuff to add to my shopping list?
it’s an anthology of short romance stories, all by the same author, and all taking place on board trains or at train stations
also one of the stories can join the second sapphire and steel serial and the shadows episode the waiting room on my list of spooky tales set in railway stations at night)
and they did! looking forward to getting the first volumes of heavenly delusion (seems like a slightly cosy post-apocalypse exploration story?) and pleasure & corruption (a femdom romance, apparently specifically bondage-themed)
it’s finally happening
Hit the comic shop for the first time in a bit and picked up Crisis Zone which rules so far, and the first issue of volume 2 of Red Room which is probably for bad people but has me looking forward to how the overarching secondary plot across all the issues is going to play out.
found a secondhand copy of “the celebrated cases of dick tracy” - featuring little face, the blank, jerome trohs, all the faves - and there’s an interview with chester gould at the start that helped explain to me the weird charged feeling that these comics have. he claims CRIME DOES NOT PAY is true on a completely literal, numerical level - the reason being that to commit a crime is to put yourself outside of human society, to become an enemy of every member of that society, a million people hunting you down - and the stories have the same trapped, paranoid nightmare quality. no matter that tracy is the nominal hero, the real heart of the stories is always the point where the criminal’s on the run and they’re forced to keep making worse and worse decisions just to stay afloat. crawling into a meat locker after a robbery with a bleeding ankle and getting so severely frostbitten their ears fall off, tearing up their ID papers which just happen to fall into a pail of dairy milk which a milk inspector investigates and passes forward to the cops. and then responding to all this with a kind of manic, seething atavism, throwing little girls out of windows and firing at policemen with a gun in each hand, screaming. great stuff.
the way the stories are constructed are sometimes pretty funny. it’ll show you a character about to do something and then the next strip will be him in a completely different situation, with a little text box explaining an important event which took place entirely offpage. sometimes the effect is very compelling. the action below is only shown in this abrupt retroactive way and so has a strangely placid, technical-illustration aspect that sits wonderfully against the content. i love the helpful little insert panel on the bottom right with all my heart.
I like it when I can tell a writer has actual experience with rabbits
Rabbits will fuck you up if they can
Whenever I think of threatening rabbits I think of this little piece
I spent a lot of years in Arizona as a kid believing Jackalopes were real
Wow this is amazing. I read it out loud to alicia as a poem, its so good
picked up saga vol. 1 earlier in the month. i’m not done reading it yet but love it so far. i meant to start this series years ago and even have issue one somewhere in my collection but only just now have bitten the bullet. it has everything i like: strong female character lead, aliens, action, ghosts, and magic.
i still haven’t read the nightwing or ya beast boy stuff yet but i will when i get the strength to!
if you haven’t read saga yet you should. that’s all i’m gonna say for now.
I just realized last week that I’ve been getting Saga and Fables mixed up for however long they’ve both been around. I have no idea which one which person has been recommending to me this whole time.
i’ve read a bit of fables and it’s interesting. i liked what i read of it! it has a completely different vibe from ’ the wolf among us ’ which is how i got introduced to everything. my rec is to read both!
the fables guy is a weird right wing ultra-zionist btw, sorry to ruin him for you but uh yeah, the comic was inspired by his take on the israel-palestine conflict
oh. . .
oh no
i appreciate the heads up honestly. . .jfc
i only read the first chapter and thought it was cute
kinda glad i only stole it now
It’s screamingly misogynist too. Like goes out of it’s way to treat women who don’t do what men want badly, punishes them disturbingly hard, and regularly exalts men who are serial abuser creeps as necessary components of society.
The mass love of fables back in the 2000s is one of those weird nerd things that never really got re-examined, and I think about it a lot.
it’s funny to think of there being an equivalent of like “anime of arbitrary quality that had a dubbed release in the 90s and became briefly ubiquitous from there” but just for whatever non-marvel/dc thing made it to a chain bookstore. y the last man, powers, that one comic about a superhero who becomes mayor after almost stopping 9/11(??)
reminds me of seeing old dark horse comics advertisements featuring Concrete of all things as the person waving and beckoning towards the reader to indicate the brave new world of comics. the young people’s favourite. and i love Concrete!!
if this had come out 15 years later there would have been a telltale game and possibly an edgar wright movie and 200 more issues of Concrete’s ever more unsettling political positions. the world that could have been.
I once bought an issue of Stray Bullets because I got it mixed up with Love and Rockets so at least I didn’t get that far with this one.
