Circuit City on the Edge of Forever

I wouldn’t worry unless it’s burning a hole through your lap

Thinking now that, in about 15 years of using laptop computers, I can probably count on one hand the number of times I’ve ever actually used one on my lap.

longer response: 85-90c is like a marginal zone of “no longer necessarily fine, but probably not a huge concern” – I wouldn’t want to see it on new parts or a big desktop overclock (mostly because it probably means you will go over 90 at some point, which is bad), but on an aging laptop when the CPU is unexpectedly at 100%, you’re realistically not going to bother re-gooping it and it’s probably below your throttling/shutdown threshold

also the ‘running ryzen on the stock cooler’ range

I just read some guitar nerds explaining that SMD board guitar pedals sound worse because they don’t use through-hole germanium diodes. I’m sorry I ever rolled my eyes at CRT or vinyl people

I would actually believe that the difference between a silicon and germanium diode is possible to perceive as they respond quite differently to voltage

The surface mounted-ness is kind of a misdirection because SMD germanium diodes are not made as far as I can tell. Outside of some specialty stuff for photonics or RF germanium is very rare (except for vintage equipment of course)

I think the driving force of this is when it comes to electric guitars it seems that old = perfect, good, beautiful and new = cheap, flawed, non-exclusive. I can’t imagine that one sound is better, just different

Does anyone have a good 32-bit Linux distro recommendation for a 2010 single core atom powered netbook?

Edit: Probably gonna go with Debian.

Edit 2: Maybe even this: https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/raspberry-pi-desktop/

I have bunsenlabs on a super low spec netbook and it still runs poorly

Actually installed this. It seems decent for what I need. Thanks! RPI desktop was giving me instant headaches.

Glad it’s working! Back when I was heavily messing with this, that sounded like the lightest weight option.

incredible, the first time I try getting a WD drive after the SMR scare and the first one out of the foil is DOA, just making awful noises and not being recognised by the NAS at all lmao

this is probably Purolator’s fault, not WD, but, yaknow

I love how everything now launches in a state that only “enthusiasts” would ever put up with because it’s more important to have the appearance of innovation than to actually get out of people’s way

My enthusiasm for technology has gone to just about zero at this point

God we got stuck for what felt like hours trying to pair a bluetooth speaker while on acid it was horrible

Definitely think the benchmark for consumer electronics ergonomics ought to be the Acid Test

I know that Blender is a good piece of software because 90% of the time I use it, I’m so high that I can’t focus on anything for more than 30 seconds and I can produce things with it anyway.
