I think 84-key layout in either normal or compacted layout is what she’s looking for.

Ah, you’re right, YUNZII is where we ended up when we looked a this a year ago, when buying computer parts was a thing people could do

i still owe you a thank you gift for that! and still v much over the moon about it, big +1 to doolittle’s suggestions

That AKKO set has 1u modifiers to fit on a compact 84 key layout so you’re good on caps either way.

If you spend more on the case/PCB combo you can get different/nicer materials and QMK firmware but I don’t know if either of those appeal. Plastic is actually quite nice acoustically (especially when you fill it with quick-cast silicone!)

I’ll have my tester with me in SLC and like… 4-5 keyboards to use as examples.

you don’t owe me a thing, I’m glad you like it.

heh, I’m not the target audience here, I don’t see any way I’ll become unhappy with the ErgoDox you sold me

You can take the tester home!

aha, let me see if I can find what I’ve still got, because I grabbed a tester last year. Bring it to the meetup for everyone, though

Does anyone know what the actual End-of-Life is going to be for Windows 10? It bugged me today about scheduling an update and also gave me a big fat “YOUR PC DOESN’T MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR WINDOWS 11” and I frankly want to put that off for as long as possible anyway

like 2025 or so

I’m not planning on updating until I build a new machine in 2023 or so

Since I will be replacing my laptop’s harddrive today with a new SSD, does anyone suggest a course of action for getting Windows onto it? Should I just install Windows 11 onto it? Is there a way I can do that without paying for Windows 11?

In your shoes, I’d clone the existing harddrive onto it not only to preserve the same Windows license, but also to avoid a day+ wasted getting all your settings and software back as you like them. You could buy a cheap SATA-to-USB3 adapter off Amazon and first plug the SSD into your laptop as an external drive to make that happen.

is using topre exclusively for a fortnight long enough to go all in on an irritating “lol at using anything else” gimmick

This would be nice. But I also kind of like the process of working with a clean slate. A fresh instance of an OS. I haven’t done that in like, maybe almost a decade. Kind of been wanting to, it’s almost relaxing just installing apps. Would love to do this with my desktop sometime, which has four drives all together, and five years of accumulated stuff spread out all over them.

The “nostalgia for the classic artisanal keyboards” aspect of the fandom always made me raise an eyebrow, so I’m glad the community is finally moving onto actually new and better keyboard tech. I’ll probably wait for the Topre clones to get a little cheaper before replacing my keyboards though

OK. According to this, if you do a clean install of the same version of Windows 10 from a downloaded ISO from microsoft.com, it should automatically reuse the Windows license you bought with your laptop. (Possibly Windows 11 would also work, I haven’t confirmed one way or another.)

I’ve done it a couple of times, it handily makes C:/Windows.old and hides all your stuff from the previous install there

If your current machine is on 10, I have recently used the “reset” function that leaves your files in place but wipes applications, the registry, and Windows back to a clean slate. No anxiety about incidental data loss that way.

If you have a valid 10 license, you get 11 for free

If you have a valid 7 license, you get 10 for free

You can give yourself a “valid” 7 license

It’s free real estate

But also don’t install 11

They don’t even have the Android app support in yet

You know, Win X… 10 tried the same thing with my 1st gen Ryzen 1800X, and boy is it starting on the wrong foot right out of the gate. 2023 seems a bit early for MS having ironed out the bugs, I’d think that 2025 might be a more realistic goal, tbh.

Adoption rate in 2022 will decide the fate of 11, let’s see whether it will be a fluke akin to ME, Vista or 8.
