this post got me to check it out and i haven’t used it yet but i did buy a month of sync just to lock in that early bird discount
Oh thanks for the reminder I’ve had that tab open for months and that was the push I needed
you don’t actually need to buy their sync if you use iCloud, because it has native iCloud support
those are the two options, their paid service and iCloud
and sure the application design of iCloud on Windows is otherwise horrible but if you just need an API to a filesystem and you already have an extant account, it works exactly as you’d want in this case
these devs think in a way I get along with
Highly recommend installing iCloud/iTunes via the Microsoft App Store and Office through the Mac App Store to avoid their respective horrible updaters
Also - it’s been a minute, is brew not really suited to installing GUI versions of apps? It usually grabs the CLI only version or nothing at all. I’ve gotten very lazy with choco on Windows but I think I’m missing something here.
brew cask install appname
oh
lol
I’m getting there!
I hate pun based utilities, they’re always far too clever for their own good
Probably wix based trauma
yeah and i can’t figure out how to use their paid sync even, but surely even if it’s a neurosis that runs counter to your own you can appreciate the compulsion to secure a cheaper rate just in case
(the discount’s apparently good for life once you get it even if you unsubscribe)
i installed vscode yesterday and spent like ten minutes today trying to figure out why it was using python 3.8.5 when brew said 3.9.7 and then i realized that i installed the older version from the package on the python website and now i don’t really know how to cleanly uninstall it. feel like IDLE is not really that vital given all the other options
“well, I guess I could give MS another chance, let me turn TPM back on and update Windows”
good update
why do desktop OS’s want to hide which programs are running vs. not? You can’t just pretend that Visual Studio or UnrealEd or Photoshop cold boots as fast as if it’s running from RAM, I know you’re lying to me
Because they correctly recognize that in an ideal universe, “running vs not” is an unnecessary conceptual barrier that wouldn’t exist at all. No matter if you rebooted or actually switched to a different device or anything, it should always be possible for workspaces to instantly reappear just as you left them last time, and never make you wait or lose any state (even minor stuff like window positions)
And they’re flailing to get to that universe, even though it’s an impossible dream not only due to fundamental resource constraints, but also because the path-dependent legacy of desktop OSes doesn’t give them particularly flexible options for better managing those constraints. It’s the sort of thing that might require starting from scratch to make real progress on.
can you still have the windows 95 style taskbar with full titles
Ah, so the idealists are winning their eternal struggle against the pragmatists?
this option wasn’t where it is in Win10 when I checked in June and was a major reason I only lasted a day
I love that you’re one of those windows users who can’t abide an OSX-style dock
this is not surprising to me somehow
anyway I haven’t looked back on this particular UX decision in 15 years but that particular dock just looks hideous, bad contrast
It’s so useful to know!
and it goes hand-in-hand with title bars and multiple window instances. This is not information that should be collapsed and hidden:
you do know that the file manager is supposed to have tabs in civilized environments
what are they putting in the water in Seattle
afaik some Russian guy already has a shell enhancement/replacement thing going that takes it back to having a sane taskbar
Finder is the worst file manager I have ever used
It hides way, way, way too much shit and whenever you complain you just get back “oh yeah you just gotta do the squiggle + raisy bar + 4 key combo duh” so intuitive, love the streamlined interface
