transplanting our PC into the new case has bettered my understanding of how bad a job NCIX did of building it (and replacing the defective motherboard they initially gave us) in the first place, there was a screw missing on the motherboard, the rest were loose, the CPU cooler is on the wrong way (so given the position of the heat pipe setup on the motherboard itself and the RAM thereā€™s nowhere for air to actually get between most of the fins), the secondary motherboard power connector was pinched in a way I didnā€™t think was possible, and they put the complete wrong screws in in like four places

I donā€™t miss NCIX per se but I do miss there being more than one computer shop in Canada

anyway it lives and now it has a 1080Ti gasping for air directly from the side panel :+1:t3:

yeah I tried to tell your partner that if they were selling you a prebuilt with an MSi board that she didnā€™t want it but I think I probably said something insanely fussy right before and afterward that discredited me

Iā€™m not sure the Asrock they replaced it with is much better, as it has a capacitor which fouls on the front PCB lip of the PCI card unless you gently nudge it out of the way as you insert it šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

So far setting up this MacBook the only app Iā€™ve encountered without an ARM binary is Discord (lol)

is Apple still being dicks about needlessly segregating the iOS app store from ARM macOS

The iOS/iPad version isnā€™t on the macOS store but Iā€™m not sure if thatā€™s on Discord or Apple because when I searched Discord I get tons of disreputable apps in the iPhone/iPad category

developers can optionally turn off iOS apps appearing on Mac, I kind of get the intent but it sucks especially given how many services have native iPad apps but electron for their Mac apps, so the iPad apps are significantly better on Mac

How the hell does discord not have a native app, yikes

their mac support seems increasingly reluctant and honestly I get it, shipping games on there is not fun anymore, let alone shipping hooks for them

you still canā€™t resize or hide the channel list so weā€™re probably expecting a bit much here

Itā€™s a great situation weā€™re in where macs are unquestionably the best laptops, but more annoying to put shit on than theyā€™ve been for fifteen years

I mean, the good news is thereā€™s enough headroom to just run Intel apps through Rosetta 2

This is faster than what my brotherā€™s 65w 5600x benched lol

Iā€™m not sure how difficult it would actually be to update it - Slack is native but Teams isnā€™t. Would love to just have the iPad app, though.

I had to cut my nails short ( :frowning: ) but I can manage 110 WPM on the new keyboard design.

Itā€™s definitely not as comfortable as the Surface Bookā€™s due to lower travel but I didnā€™t make an error in a 30 second monkeytype test.

Another split-second power outage, another hard shutdown. American power expectations/infrastructure are amazing. Starting to wonder if I should just bite the bullet and get a 200 dollar UPS.

Do they make battery backups that are designed specifically to just cover 1 or 2 second outages, rather than run your system for 5 minutes (and so are much cheaper than the full-blown UPSā€™s of the latter type)?

I have 2 craigslist UPSes (one for desktop+displays, one for router+NAS+etc) and I donā€™t think I paid that much for either of them

make sure you can get one that can coverage your system at max wattage just in case, a lot of them are rated lower than they appear to be and thatā€™s a great way to kill a PSU if you happen to lose power while your GPU etc are at max draw

threw some graphics at the 1080Ti and itā€™s a solid upgrade over the 1060 - not a generational improvement of course but enough that I think weā€™ll have the headroom to weather the GPU market being hell for a bit longer

Iā€™m able to move from 720p at a wonky frame rate to a fairly solid 1080p in Control, which is a good win, Watch_Dogs 2 goes to Ultra at 1080p now and feels solid, Halo Infinite actually hits 60 at the minimum 55% of 4K scale it can achieve in the menus, so yeah

the new case is also definitely helping with airflow, so the CPU temps are somewhat better - itā€™s still only a 65W part so weā€™re not talking huge dissipation but that was something of an issue in the Node 202 (and exacerbated by NCIXā€™s improper installation of the heatsink, which I havenā€™t actually rectified yet) - and the GPU seems pretty happy even with that healthy factory overclock going on

so my next question I have is whether Oculus will consider this fast enough for native res output or a better frame rate

The tone on foldables lately sounds like this

That said this sounds a lot like the tone VR early adopters were taking 5 years ago and the tech stayed ā€œliminalā€, so weā€™ll have to see.
