Cartoons (Part 2)

,

The CGI humans in The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, Brave, and Coco were less awful looking. Up to that point, only Wall-E made their CGI humans look shitty.

Would Wall-E be a better film if all the humans were dead and all the machines were just trapped in an endless cycle of serving corpses?

I think probably my most controversial Pixar opinion is that The Incredibles fuckin sucks and people’s obsession with that movie is a big reason why there will probably never be a good Fantastic Four film. I just find Brad Bird annoying, and I recall feeling that the movie was kind of repugnant ideologically. I’m not entirely clear on this last part since I haven’t seen the movie since it came out and I’ve forgotten most of it, just what I remember my reaction to the movie being.

I share this in my other thread. I think I can make more conversation about it here, it is easier for me to talk about a story, than the music or the culture that influenced it. I get stuck in details the same way I get stuck trying to talk about video game design.

Cool manga. I have not heard about it until this link. I saw a bit of the anime version, but looks like they are going the Soul Eater anime adaptation way than Dorohedoro. The manga has the street and graffiti inspired design that similar manga attempted in the past.

Studio Bones are playing it safe. That is not to say you should avoid or skip the anime version. It looks good, and if you liked the acid jazz and hip hop beats in Soul Eater, you got a similar OST. But the art feels like they were afraid to translate it 1:1, so you have what feels like a sanded down result.

I also don’t feel the OP fits. I get that they went for it, because it is shonen manga, and shonen anime rarely get an OP and ED that are not pop, pop rock, or rock. I felt like you could have gone with a band like Back-on, or like Dragon Ash, Orange Range (like the video referenced), even Home Made Kazoku would have been a good OP.

The ED is better, but I would have felt that Dos Monos, Moe and Ghosts, m-flo (Panty & Stocking), Daoko, Ame to Kanmuri, SMTK, Creepy Nuts, and so on are better than fucking Dustcell.

You are going to read it and you are going to like it.

Saw the first two EPs. Def feel the Soul Eater vibes but enjoying it just being just a little edgier that the usual shonen comic title but both in a fun way but with enough stakes to stay weighty in the moment.

These people do know that the Incredibles was evoking a whole art style and aesthetic movement to establish tone and expectations and that it didn’t invent 60’s modernism and spy movies from whole cloth…

…right?

I’ve been catching up with Watanabe’s Lazarus and ngl the “Hey, remember Cowboy Bebop” of it all is a bit annoying tbh

Otherwise it’s… fine so far?

It also doesn’t culminate into anything of note at all. It’s pretty, it sounds good, the script could be a hell of a lot better and the character work is very underbaked. Adult Swim really isn’t pulling these off as far as I can tell.

Watanabe wanted to do something more similar to Space Dandy. Adult Swim wanted him to do something more similar to Cowboy Bebop. Rather than giving him a 26 episode order, they expected him to deliver another Cowboy Bebop with 13 episodes. This just does not work, simply because Bebop is largely episodic. Lazarus tries to be more story driven with less episodes to work with and more characters to balance. It is fuckin’ shite, mate. At least you got three separate and good OST’s out of this.

I remembered this short was a thing. LeSean Thomas worked on it prior to Cannon Busters. It had the same character designer as Michiko & Hatchin. It had black talent and black voice acting. It had a lot going for it, and then, it just failed to deliver. You can’t tell the ambitious story you want to tell in 15 minutes. Just like Lazarus can’t do what it wanted to do in 13 episodes. Even if you have a talented staff behind it, there is only so much you can do if you bite more than you can chew. Plenty of 15 minutes shorts work, because they don’t try to do too much with too little. Many 13 episode anime work, because they don’t try to do a lot with too little. Lazarus did not learn from this. At this point, I really doubt Adult Swim knows how to do anime. All the anime ideas they come up with are incredibly short sighted, like those FLCL sequels, or incredibly badly done, like Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

This article is all over the place with whatever happened during the panel, but the main thing is that the movie is coming out next…ah fuck next year, thought it was next month.

Hope it’s as good as everyone made it out to be.
