Cartoons (Part 2)

,

caught a viewing of A Kind of Testament

too much humour to be menacing or disgusting. the animation is very nice, another Gobelins grad. something 4-10 times longer would have had enough space to hone the themes (death, regret, online parasocialism) and make it creepier

trying to unfuck the anime situation for watching through plex, half this shit doesn’t register. and I guess I got to have a separate thing for shows and movies, can’t keep it all to one anime quarantine zone. they really just name these files whatever they want, sure put the release groups name at the front of the file instead of the actual name of show cause you’re just god I guess

Yeah the three file structure tricks I’ve figured out for Plex are:

  • Separate root dirs for TV and movies like you mentioned.
    • OVAs typically go on the TV side.
  • If Plex doesn’t figure out what show it is, you can rename the directory or the files, but the most reliable method is to use the submenu in the Plex web UI where you can manually associate it
  • If Plex doesn’t figure out what season a directory is, rename the season directory like ā€œs01ā€. If it doesn’t figure out which episode a file is, rename the episode to begin with ā€œe01ā€.
    • It can help to move ā€œbonusā€ episodes into a fake season directory like s00

So overall my directory structure looks something like: D:\Plex TV\Spy Family\s01\e01.avi . (Although I only bother renaming/moving things if it doesn’t work automatically as downloaded in the first place.)

if you want to preserve the original file name (I do), you can make a ā€œlinkā€ to the file from the Media root to the Folder Filled With Weird Names

or use NFO files to record the real name and somehow convince Plex to read them/switch to Jellyfin

life’s too short to figure out running jellyfin on a synology and am6b+

Is this a thread just for cartoons? I started watching Pluto TV lately and some of their classic cartoon channel has me in my feelings. I was such a big fan of ThunderCats when I was a kid and it’s terrible now lol. G1 Transformers was was and still is pretty entertaining.

That still hits.

i have a weirder history with thundercats, but it ends the same. i inexplicably hated it as a kid, then as a teen, me and my friends were always on the hunt for old vhs tapes of it to watch together. then last year, i got a dvd boxset of half of season one for a couple of pounds and found it to be unwatchably awful

Yeah, it doesn’t hold up. Lion-O is still a fun character to root for but everything is paper thin.

The Sword of Omens is extremely cool and I think even as a kid it was the only thing I cared much about

The classics

Despite the opening, I somehow did not expect the first ep of The Woman Called Fujiko Mine to involve quite as much breasting boobily as it does. It also does the usual Lupin III shit very well! All in all, though, it’s quite a contrast to Steven Universe, which is also part of my current group watch. Preventing tonal whiplash is the show sandwiched between them, The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World, which makes a good first impression. The jokes may be obvious–the transformation explosions are diegetic! The sentai theme is silly (and yet not quite implausible)!–but they’re executed well, and I always have time for sentai stuff. It also has inevitable anime breasting, but you know, kid-friendly.

I was not keeping up with anime at all when that came out, and then really loved Lupin part 4 and part 5, and people told me to go back and watch Fujiko Mine, and I honestly found it to be like, trying too hard on every dimension – it’s oversexualized but not in a fun or interesting way compared with Fujiko as a character in the later series

it sucks that yamamoto sayo hasn’t worked on a show, as far as i can tell, since yuri on ice
