still workin thru mizuiro jidai. sort of middling and episode conflicts resolve themselves a little too easily but i can vibe with it & i still enjoy the wistfulness and the spirit of fostering mutual understanding. i wonder if i’d’ve turned out differently if i’d watched this as a kid instead of like, minecraft youtubers. protagonist continues to be an endearingly helpless mope but she’s improving, also i think this anime has my fav episode previews. screencaps of cute moments
i also watched most of O Maidens In Your Savage Season in a single day and loved it!! delivered on everything i liked about okada’s writing in toradora but with none of the cruft (mostly). i was afraid this would make it too put-together at first but its actually much more freaked out and often unpleasant and it retains the big-hearted melodramatic climaxes with added weight from its willingness to undercut itself with humor otherwise, etc., unlike what i watched of anohana which was pretty maudlin. makes a more explicit project of like, playing with how sincerely it invokes bad taste anime tropes than either toradora or the incest subplot in wixoss did, which for some reason i needed clarification that that was on purpose!!
edit i love that one of the characters’ gay awakening takes place in the form of a street fighter v product placement

the funimation captions for love live sunshine spell Chika as lowercase chica and mari says “si” in the english dub when she’d say “yes!” in the japanese dub. one caption says a girl transferred from oaxaca. ngl i love it

just finished tenshi ni narumon. my head hurtss. suspect almost all of the utena-adjacent stuff is facile nd there purely to look cool nd in any case it’s incoherent in a way im not sure i like. its like 80% guff nd anime romcom cliches with occasional intrusions of weird shit nd having finished the show im not sure if that redeems it - i might be misremembering though. also there’s that ep where the mom gives up on her ambitions of entering a world-class witch tournament to be a housewife and its just treated as a given
on the other hand it feels shortsighted to fixate on themes including the debatable regressiveness thereof too much. not that the form is all that interesting either. well, i guess i’ll wait and see if it sticks with me anyhoo.
