Cool that someone thought to make shows for gen xers to watch with their adolescent grandchildren

saw the Spy x Family movie on a whim

I don’t think Spy x Family is for me, but I enjoyed the unimportant original side story non-canon moviefilm

What do you fucking mean, John Waters is in this?

As confusing as it is, and as much as I wish he was in something that was, y’know, good, I do have to give the dude credit for probably going “The kids are into this? I should probably give my blessing to it”.

It would be cool if the project he was in wasn’t just Tumblr’s id regurgitated to cash in on the first wave of nostalgia for the early 2010s with one furry bait character added in on top.

I just saw a trailer for the Chuckie show that he is also apparently in. Hope he is being paid well, I know he’s making a new movie so maybe he needed to do some favors to get it made … Godspeed you weird little freak

reminds me i wanted to share this v good critique Bobby Schroeder made of Hazbin Hotel

https://ponett.medium.com/my-own-personal-hell-thoughts-on-hazbin-hotel-1b226af317f5

especially like the bits about the character designs mushing together (AND THERE BEING A MILLION FUCKING ONCELERS IN THIS DAMN CAST!!!)

i am nominally kind of a sucker for some of these character designs. like on a ref sheet or in some fanart, they look rad to me. Im slightly more interested in Helluva Boss because i love imps and i think theyre cute imps. i love a funny lil demon dude. RS Horvitz is even in it hes kind of an IRL funny lil demon dude. i do think loona is hot and im rly sorry.)

buttttt theres no color contrast between any of the characters, theyre all covered in candy stripes and spangly bits that are made to overlap in annoying ways, these shows have gotta be a fucking nightmare to animate (and be compensated for on time, apparently). AND THERES SO MANY GODDAMN FUCKINT ONCELERS

All the writing shit is embarrassing too, literally like mistakes i am afraid i could easily make by getting way too up my own ass about my ideas & afraid to change them.

wanna say, i watched the pilots of both of these when they came out and actually found them pretty cute!! (and better than isolated clips on twitter made them look) so its a drag that they apparently fixed none of the issues that a pilot raises and just did a whole series on the first draft. which… again is uncomfortably close to a mistake i would easily make

theres a character in Hazbin Hotel named Vaggie which literally turns out to be short for Vagina and shes an angry (latina!) lesbian and her name.is pronounced such that it can easily be misheard as “f*ggy” and bobby jokes about all this in that piece but LIKE, THIS, is all stuff u FIX after u do the pilot. These aren’t ideas you commit to they’re ones you catch on review like, “huh maybe we dont accidentally name the prominent lesbian a slur via intentionally naming her a sex organ”

idk if this is for the Cartoons or the Movies thread, but i also saw Spy x Family: Code White during its opening weekend. i’ll start by saying, i really enjoyed it and had a good time.

however

i really can’t help but feel the story asked a looooooot of the audience to suspend its disbelief at times. i mean the show is always cartoony and skirting lines of reality, of course, but i found the entire end set piece to be kind of ridiculous. it’s genuinely hard to believe that Yor and Loid, who are supposed to be these highly-skilled people who can sniff out any and all threats or subterfuge, are absolutely, completely unsuspicious of each other by the end of this movie. i mean why the fuck does Loid know how to fly a plane - how would he be able to survive a crash landing ONTO another plane? why is he not baffled by Yor’s presence on the plane? they both encounter literal brushes with death - how do they think they each survived this event on their own if they each believe the other is a normal citizen? they both act like this is completely normal or acceptable to find one another alive in this place. it’s preposterous!!!

i guess so far i feel like the series has done a good job of balancing the silly with the actual and hasn’t crossed lines that feel ridiculous, but the film felt a little like they just wanted to do some fun things and not have to think too hard about how or why. which is fine, but i also hope is not an indicator of the tone to come.

since Code: White was my first brush with the franchise, my walk back home from the theater was me asking people who knew better a bunch of questions amounting to “what the fuck”

I asked several times if Loid seriously, actually didn’t know and then I questioned Bond’s ability to see the future because the film establishing him being able to see the future is followed by Anya immediately going “I reject your reality and substitute my own”

CAN YOU ACTUALLY SEE THE FUTURE IF SOMEONE ELSE CAN SEE YOUR SCRYING AND THEN CHANGE THE FUTURE

IT WASN’T THE FUTURE THEN, WAS IT DOG

hideo kojima recommended the train anime on twitter and i decided to check it out.

it’s about how the rollout of 7G technology in japan broke the fabric of spacetime

it’s actually pretty funny. really interesting how good some of these recent anime-original comedies have been

(name of the show is ‘train to the end of the world’)

i don’t know how long this link will be up but apparently an episode has leaked from a Ren & Stimpy revival series. seems like pretty weak stuff.

Yeah wow, very mid

digital circus has some “first draft of someone’s mid-2000s webcomic” energy in its writing that was present in the pilot but stands out more here. the thin characters don’t develop outside of the lead having a serious talk about depression, but there’s time for a painful ‘master of unlocking’ reference that surely its target audience is too young to recognize? the plot centers on some presumably real human people stuck in backrooms computer world, but most of the humans are written almost as tropey and unnatural as the NPCs that are trying to play it up

i am kinda captivated by it anyway, though. an indie animation studio gets an inexplicably huge pilot out of nowhere and you can feel them trying to figure out what to do with that in real time. leaning into saving money on your crowd shots by using artist’s mannequins is funny. filling an out of bounds area with utah teapots is cute in a way that almost doesn’t make me feel like they are doing some vaporwave shit to me. even just the strong sense that they’re winging it is kinda fun, i want to see where it goes before the wheels fall off

I’ll give the show this:

The characters have legible distinct silhouettes, which means it’s doin’ better with the designs than Hazbin.

It does feel exactly like webcomic writing, though.
