Cartoons (Part 2)

baki being domestic with his preposterous dad :pushu:

Continuing my tradition of being late to everything, I’m watching Samurai Champloo for the first time and enjoying it. I think in some ways it improves on a lot of stuff from Cowboy Bebop but overall I still liked that more. For one the music felt more thematically connected to the show. I like what they’re going for with this one but sometimes it feels like they hold back a little. It seems like there are way more references to Japanese pop culture in this one so some of the jokes definitely go over my head. Fuu is not nearly as irritating or pervy a character as she could be so I guess they deserve some credit for that. I think ultimately the dynamic between Jin and Mugen is not as interesting as Jet and Spike, and also the characters themselves feel a little more predictable. But I guess that’s part of the charm.

Baseball episode is good, I don’t remember anything else about the show

There’s a few good moments. Probably the best action sequence is in the first episode.

I never liked it as much as Bebop.

Oh is this the time where I get to trot out my pet theory that Bebop and Champloo are formal inversions of each other and can only be fully appreciated as a contiguous whole

Bebop is about being unable to escape the past. Champloo is about overcoming your past and living for the future

That’s why it’s big band jazz (old) in ostensibly future space, but fresh new hip hop in medieval Japan, get it??

Hey I watched Mutant Mayhem and loved just about every damn minute. Emphasizing the “Teenage” was a great move.

Yeah! I just saw that movie the other day too. That was the best TMNT media I’ve ever seen (though I admit I largely tapped out after the 80’s stuff). Those turtles felt so realistically teenage! It was really charming. I really liked the grotesque character designs too, very distinctive.

This will probably be decent but the fact that it lacks both a protagonist who is not modeled on an actor with a name that is pronounced differently on a per-character basis is very discouraging

Although the absence of Water Puzzles is very encouraging

I was already quite intrigued by this because it’s exactky my kind of french trash, but Rayman as the smiling face of fascism is tickling some of my funny bones

This looks incredible! Very cool

watching Diebuster and amused at how much Tycho looks like they just glued pigtails onto Rei

Tycho Science is my favorite anime character, and her deranged pigtails, Tennis mecha and all-timer name of “Tycho Science” all contribute in equal measure.
