lupin zero is the most straightforwardly sexist in the 1960s/horny teen comedy sense of modern lupins but as a narrative and emotional arc much sharper than the actual mainline stuff. even though it does all the dumb prequel stuff i hated solo for i still like it
Hey
Fuck all other cartoons
Bofuri s2 started this week
If you haven’t seen Bofuri, it’s about a girl who doesn’t play games whose friend gets her into a VRMMO and then she games so hard by accident that she becomes the most powerful character in the game, to the point where the GMs start target nerfing stuff she does
It doesn’t work
And now Maple and her pet turtle Syrup are back to game even harder
In the first five minutes, she solos a raid boss by turning into a 4 armed Eva-04 and tearing apart and eating it
This show is good
I was really impressed with the first episode and less so as it went on but the production design is still really impressive
I hated the first two episodes but thought episode three was a step in the right direction… and then it got bad again.
i tried to watch the original lupin last year and i’m just gonna say that i hated it because of how gross and sexist it was. i don’t see the appeal of the show in any iteration besides like, ’ guns are cool ', ’ smoking is cool ', ’ lupin’s character design is cool '. it’s a very ’ bro ’ anime tho imho
it’s like when i realized i couldn’t finish gundam 0083, despite loving it growing up because they make it so obvious that the show is catering to straight men and these kinds of cues when they talk to or about women make me insanely uncomfortable.
sorry to rain on anyone’s parade tho. i don’t think you’re a chud if you watch lupin but i also think that like, maybe we shouldn’t entertain certain things after a certain period. it becomes less ab kitsch and more ab ’ hey maybe i could watch things where women are seen as more than trophies or trouble makers who also happen to be trophies '.
gundam is both good and terrible is what i’ve been noticing since i picked up 00 right after i finished g-witch. if i have to hear the phrase ’ celestial being ’ one more time while watching this i might just have to drop it. it’s charming in the sense that i’m watching an anime from 2007 that doesn’t look like dogshit or have bad character designs ( i’m also watching xxxHOLIC, i have a love / hate relationship with CLAMP ) but it’s also makes me nervous watching a show with such heavy political themes that are from that era.
my memory of amerikkkan history is garbled at this point. i really gotta brush on my my reading or something but, i’m just waiting for this show to show me some fascist shit since all i ever knew about it was that everyone liked the dude ( who i thought was a woman until a few days ago ) who is nothing but a murderer and tsun trope.
lockon is hot tho and he doesn’t seem to enjoy killing people like some of the other characters do, despite. . .doing it anyway.
early part 1 lupin is the most sexist, definitely. The Miyazaki-era Lupin cartoons need a lot less excusing to justify liking them
Speaking of bad, poorly drawn sexist cartoons (nsfw)
I saw this tweet and this woman’s outfit was bothering me because I’d seen something like it before and then it hit me
Someone linked me to a youtube video and it’s such a weird object. Half the episode is live action smashed with key art like a motorcycle racing through tokyo morphing into a digital filter then a polaroid of it, awkwardly shuffling the cel around in place of ANIMATING anything. TW’s apply (technically a hentai I guess) although the first episode having a sex scene that dissolves into two real people fucking is the apotheosis of Hideaki Anno’s career.
Someone told me to watch the last episode of Lupin Part II and I have no idea how Miyazaki got away with this
Miyazaki loved to reuse imagery from his youthful projects. Between the two eps he directed of Lupin III part 2 and the entirety of Future Boy Conan, you can see his entire film career in miniature
i think the live action portions of this are enough for anidb to exclude it, since i got this when i searched the title
confirmation that evangelion is Not Anime
watching the owl house now that it is finite and short. it’s great but occasionally i’m reminded that it’s made by people about my age when, eg they mention making amvs or quote dialogue re: love blooming on a battlefield. mortifying but darkly funny to imagine kids getting into metal gear solid as a result, like reading the crying of lot 49 because of lemony snicket ahem
have i ever told you about how all my zoomer friends are homestucks for some reason
been watching Hajime no Ippo (2000), i’m about 60 episodes in. love this anime to death, just a really good cast of characters. i especially love the chief
owl house definitely now my favorite cartoon like it. it’s just plain better than gravity falls because the pacing is deliberate — they knew what they wanted to make from the get-go and episodes are 22 minutes
they thankfully cut out any referential comedy quickly and goofy alex hirsch voices are still funny to me. basically every english voice actor i enjoy is in it, even sonic
maybe the highest praise i can give is that i like its mysteries and escalation more than the fullmetal alchemist beats it’s riffing on, and it throws big gut punches without resolving them to avoid serialization
i really like the weird bitterness of shows that were canceled prematurely and finished with that knowledge so i’m excited for however this ends with the last two specials
was feeling more depressed than usual last week and did what I usually do when I’m feeling bad: watched the last 20 episodes of fullmetal alchemist brotherhood. for some reason it’s always what I want to watch in that situation.
I also finally finished yuru camp, which I enjoy as a relaxation/go to sleep show. it makes me want to go camping very badly.
the new urusei yatsura continues to be very very funny
