the pop team epic finale was mostly a full 22 minute episode of the fake tokusatsu show from the episode 1 credits. absolutely the most self indulgent nonsense around. great season
i finally took a look at the adv-published gravion dvds i got a few months ago and added to my backlog.
there’s a bunch of extras on each disc (just little things like music videos, japanese trailer, etc., but still a surprise. what really surprised me though, was that each disc is also packaged with a little booklet contaning design sketches and a serialised side-story from the show’s scriptwriter!
also, i currently have the trailers for other adv releases from the first disc playing, and it’s very nostalgic. evangelion, mezzo dsa, last exile, puni puni poemy (that they’re selling as being incredibly offensive and shocking for some reason?), and chrno crusade. it’s probably just the nostalgia for that era, but i kinda want them all lol. they’d probably set me back a fair bit more than the £2 a disc i paid for gravion though
chrono crusade is the absolute peak of being 13 in hmv browsing the anime section canon for me.
fell asleep to an episode of mazinger z on twitch that i thought i embellished to make more brutal in my falling asleep state, but no, it was about a guys dog getting killed by a tree that got knocked over by a giant robot and then holding a grudge against the robot pilot so the Bad Guys killed the puppies to make the dude even madder, which made him beat the shit out of the main character until he couldnt see, making him unable to pilot the mazinger and beat the Bad Dudes
edit:
Skimmed the discourse on Chainsaw Man but I have successfully enjoyed how violent and horny it is; thus meeting my Anime Needs enough for one year
After a number of months I finished up the main Steven Universe series (I watched two episodes while doing my three times a week leg strengthening exercises) and it was pretty good. Like I said before I think the first thing I saw of the series years back was either the movie or the very last episode followed by the Steven Universe Future series so I went about things in just about the dumbest order possible but it still worked out fine.
What struck me is that this must have been a rough show to catch as it aired as I recall complaints of how irregularly it’d pop up in later seasons and for the most part it seemed scripted to benefit from regular airings. While I’d occasionally get antsy when there were a bunch of townie episodes in a row I always knew I had another pair of eps just a couple days away, I imagine if those were the only eps I got that month it’d be markedly more annoying.
It is funny the bits I remembered catching sans any context years ago when I came back to them it was almost universally very “ooooooooh I remember this, wow given what’s happened there was a lot more going on under the surface than I knew”.
Anyways movie’s up next, now I can watch it with some knowledge as to who all these different characters are!
I remember really liking the Steven Universe movie! I especially enjoyed the villain. She’s got the over-the-top bendy, stretchy animation of a Fleischer character, and she really channels that certain demented comic sadism that characterizes a lot of 30’s cartoons. I went back and rewatched her introduction song a bunch of times, best part of the movie.
been chugging through the later episodes w my partner this break and remembering that time… it was very funny yes
The movie owns, kinda hope it turns out you never saw it so you get to experience it fresh.
Funny that SU has come up because I’ve been watching clips on YouTube lately because they’ve been recommended to me. Really some good stuff overall.
Oh no I definitely saw at least 70% of the movie, I’m just unsure if it was the very first thing of SU I caught. I recall it being pretty neat (it was enough to get me to watch Future then the original series after all) but a bunch of my memories are fuzzy and I knew virtually none of the background so I’m excited to see what I didn’t catch on first viewing.
(I’m also looking forward to the Drifting Away song, remember that sticking out at the time).
I don’t know if this is a hot take but Do It For Her was the best song in the show and the ep it is from might still be my favorite, it was a very “the show is not scared to touch on something like this” ep that is probably what truly set the hook for me.
Yeah, I definitely enjoyed Pearl’s stuff the most across all of SU. She’s such mess, she gets the best songs, and I love that voice actor.
Pearl is solidly my favorite character in the whole show for pretty much the same reasons you gave. Amethyst was more superficially dealing with shit but Pearl had that strong “if I don’t hold myself together at all times I’ll just fall completely apart” energy going on.
the one thing i disliked about the chainsaw man anime finale is that for some reason they thought it would be a good idea to have 3(three!) post-credits scenes back-to-back. such a bizarre choice.
i think that says a lot about why i bounced so hard off that show
I’ve been watching Kids on the Slope. It took me a couple episodes to warm up to it, but it really goes places! An extremely relatable depiction of all kinds of teenage anguish, idiocy, and drama, where every emotional journey climaxes in the world’s most cathartic jazz improv session. There’s even communism! Loving it.
Sentaro has quickly become a top 10 anime character! I was always more of a Richie style teen unfortunately, but we can all aspire to be Sentaros in our lives.
