never heard of this group but their stuff is sickkkk very impressed with the quality of these scans
it’s not that hard to clean a print if you know what you’re doing, it’s just time consuming, careful work, and you have to have a scanner and rights to a film on top of that, so it’s awesome that this has been democratized lately to the extent that it has
navigating that whole process, down to encoding the file at the end, is a phenomenal preservation curriculum, but hardly anyone in North America teaches it that way except for NYU MIAP, because it’s just not that much in demand. if you want to learn it other than on a volunteer basis and without paying more for your education than you’d make back you have to go to Europe
what’s the process they’re using here do you think?
I’m on my phone at the beach so I can’t make out any postprocessing nuances but beyond maybe a DNR pass and basic grading they don’t need to do much to a scan of a decent print to get a 4K hevc out of it
I don’t think you can put raw DPXes into davinci but whether you’re using rawcooked or prores output from the scanner that’s like a single ffmpeg step either way

what i’m especially enjoying about these rescans of old shit is what they reveal is totally fucking lacking or sanded off in contemporary jtoons like scratchier lines, softer colours

They’re probably not doing another season of Primal after this one but I really, really want them to just keep going with it. Though after this season I have no idea where they could take it after this so it’s probably best to just leave it where they did.

yurei deco is interesting. i’m really mixed on it. it’s written by dai sato whose work i have enjoyed on stuff like fujiko mine, cowboy bebop, space dandy, stand alone complex etc. it’s a science saru show so it looks great although it very much feels like a kids show like the ideal target audience would be a ten year old maybe but not on purpose? maybe? that’s not usually a problem for me in something like say craig of the creek where it’s like the show i would have wanted to have as a ten year old. i guess maybe i’m just saying it has a general audiences feel like uh…old doctor who or star trek tng or something although the show does star literal children so that’s a whole different thing. i’m still trying to parse it out. i guess the dai sato thing it feels closet to in vibe is maybe eureka seven?
it’s one of those ragtag freedom fighters vs the matrix stories about a really detailed world where AR and digital currency/social capital has fully taken over. the whole thing is full of mark twain references. there are locations called mark twain and tom sawyer. the main three characters are hack, berry, and finn (get it) there are even characters named after “injun joe” (in this version injunction jo) and puddinhead.
it has very twee/childish energy especially from the character hack who is sort of a radical ed-ish annoying kiddie androgynous hacker whose dialog is such gibberish that the translators work overtime to englishify. i really dig it’s weird pastel goofy kiddieness but i can’t really think of a person i’d recommend it to. the ending is sort of a dry fart and actually the whole thing is kind of interesting just trying to parse out the politics of the writer in a way. i think i will enjoy this more as an artbook than a tv show.
in once recent episode they go to a planet where an old man is constantly racing against younger versions of himself, obviously inspired by the like time trials ghosts in racing games, but it was weirdly poignant. it also reminded me of stuff like facebook memories, where you are shown what you were doing on exactly this day 10 years ago, and it always feels kind of like you’re competing with your past self to have a pleasant life
also the soundtrack is like 100% solid gold lofi hip hop beats to study and relax to bangers and its real good
It’s really cool that the Cyberpunk cartoon is just called Edge Runners. Like if they did a Witcher cartoon called Masters of the Ring
