You’re a better man for not knowing it firsthand. Faint praise for Haruhi taking the piss with their fans but the delivery is so low effort that it had no redeeming value otherwise. The second season may as well not have happened because that arc dragged it all down.
The author’s note in the back of All You Need Is Kill is just the dude saying exactly this, in case you read the book and didn’t pick up on it. I laughed.
Didn’t they actually re-animate, not just re-use, large parts of the episodes each time? Say what you will about the experience, that’s certainly not low-effort. Totally wasted effort, maybe!
I had to go look and yes, you’re right. They re-animated and re-dubbed significant portions of each of the eight episodes. Theory is they were going to adapt one other arc from the light novels but the producers decided late in production that the arc would be played out in a movie instead. So to fill in the seven episode gap that taking out the arc created, this happened.
Insanity.

Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro - I like the look and feel of this show and it’s probably the best short on at the very least

Sakamoto desu ka (shorter than the English title, let me be lazy) - I’ve heard nothing but good things about the manga and the sheer ridiculousness of the source material shines through, but I can’t quite put my finger on whatever seems off about the show, like the direction or production values aren’t all there
I think it’s that the character design and art was definitely a weak point in the original comic, and still a weak point in the show.
Also, some of the puns are completely incomprehensible in translation.
Kabaneri seems like a marginally better version of Attack on Titan after the first episode, but I’m still probably not going to watch it. I like the art design quite a bit though.
I only read the first chapter or two of the Sakamoto manga and while the artistic quality might not have been that high level I remember its strong presentation with use of speed lines and gradients that left a stronger impact which is where I feel the animation isn’t quite capturing. Still ridiculous to be amusing but feels it’s missing some key component to bring it all together.
I re-watched that Eva last week. It’s a pretty cool cartoon.

Having finally watched ep 2 of Kiznaiver, I enjoy the fact that the premise of the show has given all of the character development one would expect over several episodes of cartoon in one silly, 25-minute shot

It’s no Blood Blockade Battlefront but Bunko Stray Dogs scratches that similar itch of a bunch of weirdoes with powers and everyone has a few screws loose. My kind of entertainment if a tad rote.
Dang the new Powerpuff Girls tried to do an explicitly trans-supportive episode and fucked it up in every possible way
i also don’t dig the look. A lot of shows that started as cel-animated but turned to computer-drawn before they ended did not make the transition well, and ended up looking kind of ugly cheap instead. Dexter’s Lab suffered from this problem and so did OG PPG. the new show looks like it just picked up from where it left off and isn’t very appealing. heck, it looks worse! they lost those delicious thick chunky lines!
That’s kind of a shame because I remember they did a one shot special last year or so that made it look like it was made of bits of wax paper which was kinda cool looking. Never saw the whole thing but heard that viewers at large didn’t like it.
The one-shot from last year was great because it looked like an animated Golden Book but everyone complained about the look, so we get “Like the original, but bad”
Like, I tried to be open about it but it’s pretty shoddily made, and not just on the art front either.
