YaoMi plz retire from Anime for real so you can do a couple more watercolor interior books before death.
i admit defeat im watching original gundam dubbed on crunchyroll and its a treat, everyone knows amaro is a technofreak
cartoons that I’ve watched recently (recently is now the past year) that I haven’t typed words about that I want to type words about:
Photokano: technically I typed a shitton of words about this in the thread where I shitpost about anime but I just want to say I cannot believe the 180 this show did from the intro eps to the actual routes, going from “generic dating sim adaptation” to “kinda cool romance anthology where a bunch of different storyboarders get to flex and also one of the storyboarders flexing is Yuasa”
Just Because: this is probably one of the best romcom drama things of the past few years? it feels so fucking real and authentic and doesn’t do dumb anime shit like misunderstandings and you feel like the characters actually live lives when they’re off-screen.
but also I agree with everyone who hated the show because Camera didn’t win
Real Girl (3D Kanojo): a show about a supernerd who gets a girlfriend because the girlfriend is going to get a brain surgery that might wipe away her memories so fuck it let’s live life. they have a cute relationship and they both engage with each other earnestly and the relationship feels less fake but it’s still some sugary shoujo nonsense. also his best nerd friend also falls and love and gets some before he does. also also the best girl in the show, the outspoken hanger-on girl who gives advice, is good and deserves good things. also also also the popular guy who falls into their clique for some reason is okay except for that time he made everyone think supernerd was a pedophile. has a very shoujo ending. I liked it more than I thought I was going to.
Day I Became God: I understand that Jun Maeda is currently very sick; however fuck this man I hope he never writes again and I’m willing to break his fingers so badly that he can never write again. goes from “guy meets possibly insane girl who can predict everything and calls herself a god” to “hey a cool mahjong episode” to “no actually the reason she can do this is because they implanted a quantum supercomputer into her brain to cure her Anime Disease” to “oh no the company that made the computer wants it back and once they uninstall it she’s back to being mentally disabled”(???) to “guy figures out he loves her” to (I am 100% not making this up) “guy goes to the care facility where she is now living with fake psychiatric credentials and pretends to be her former caregiver” (?!?!??!?!?!) to the actual caregiver going “well, she wants to be with him, guess I better let her go live with someone who literally faked being an accredited doctor to be with this mentally and physically challenged child” (oh shit guy what the fuck are you doing?!?!??!?!?!)
I watched this in one shot while drinking and I still feel the pain of how unbearably shitty and incomprehensible it was
but hey, she got to finish the movie they were making
Disenchanted (Part 3): I watched the first 5 eps of the newest part/season/whatever and it seems slightly funnier but also they totally sidelined Luci so that sucks. also the plot seems to be going in a dumb direction and they should really stop trying to have an overarching plot because they can’t do good with it.
I have no problem with the idea that Zog now has a mental illness because of trauma caused by being buried alive but holy shit the way they manifest it and play it for humor is offensive and I usually shrug this kind of shit off, like, goddamn I know PTSD manifests itself differently in people but he’s literally just making loud noises and acting off
oh wow
two seasons of the clone high reboot and an adult velma dinkley cartoon seem…fine but i still honestly just want hbo to just do a final season of venture bros tbh
my little brother and his two sprogs are going to go fucking berserk for this
What, Pup Named Scooby Doo wasn’t enough origin story for some people?
The Promised Neverland is way better than I expected. I had honestly written it off, and I don’t know why.
Watching more Sailor Moon S when I want to relax
I had forgotten how excellent the villains in this show are

my friend did the audio design and bgs on this one! they scouted him after he did fanart!
I’m finally sitting down and watching the Symphogear G BD
I remembered that every episode ended with a ridiculous cliffhanger engineered to be as insane as possible
what I forgot is that every episode’s cold open is just leading into the building up of the opening and recapping or throwing out even more ridiculous nonsense in a manner perfectly engineered to create maximum hype
I love this fucking stupid show
everything must be franchise
and this sure is an uh…tightrope walk to try to pull off
A source with knowledge of the project told Variety that the Netflix series is completely independent of the Avatar Studios deal and that the live-action series is still moving forward at the streaming platform. It is the only-live action “Avatar” project based on the franchise to date.
ha ha ha
Recently finished watching the first series of evangelion for the first time. I had watched the two movies that follow-up the series a long time ago and it never really understood what I watched. I recently considered re-watching are based on a friend’s recommendation. I probably don’t have very much to say about it that hasn’t already been observed elsewhere. It strikes me as very similar to twin peaks since both are TV genre deconstruction is with mixed success and reception. Coming away from it I’m actually surprised at how few lingering questions are actually ever answered and I respect the commitment of the ending of the series to basically deflecting the focus to the outward psychological health of its viewers. The only episode I watched twice was episode 26 just because I found it useful for thinking through my own current situation. I don’t know if anything after the original series and movies is worth watching, from what I gather the wikis they just seem to reboot and retell the same story with variations rather than explore any more of that world. I know I’m extremely late viewing it but it’s a good show.
I haven’t watched all of the newer Evangelion content but the first Rebuild at least is worth watching in my book because my single favorite monster-of-the-week, Big Floating Crystal, now looks even cooler

Fuckin’ sweet
Anyway my considered take on Evangelion, over two decades after first watching it, is that the metafictional/psychological stuff is cool and all but a bit overemphasized in the discourse, and what I love about it in retrospect is that it’s an excellent action anime that hits a home run on the fundamentals (art concepts, pacing and cinematography)
That is for sure a cool redesign.
I definitely don’t want to undersell how impactful it was formally as a show. It has some very economical staging and shot composition (a technique that persists throughout is the slow reveal of something behind something else which works in dramatic and comedic contexts equally well) and the show would probably work as a straightahead action series. It’s one of those shows that gets the chaos of an emerging situation right and the alarms going off is euphoria every time. I think I just noticed that the series was going a certain direction by the midteens episodes and kind of just went with the flow. I might check out rebirth one day
im cool with the rebuilds, but i stand by old cube being far more menacing
