Cartoons (Part 1)

,

New Season New Cartoon hot takes.

Jobless Reincarnation- This is to well made for what it is. The animation, the direction, sound design everything is firing on all cylinders and whatever more cylinders they can add to the engine. Unfortunately its just another isekai power fantasy based off a light novel. Our hero was the scummiest of scumy otaku (he played guilty gear and had a dizzy figure) but you see he was the subject of bullying in a comicly excessive fashion. He was stripped and bound to a fence for the whole school to see so he’s justified in trying to cut himself off from the world until his parents throw him out. This should be hot trash but the work on display is to strong and I’m a sucker for Sugita being the scumbag narrator voice.

End Game villager in start town- Cute, funny and kinda sweet. Lyod is a good boy trying to do his best but has self esteem problems but happens to be a god among insects without knowing it. Watching him yeet giant grasshoppers keeps being funny. This is fun trash.

So I’m a spider am I? - More fun. Another isekai set up but it’s a whole class room this time and one of them is a spider mob in a cave somewhere. Heroine has good energy and is carried by being to dumb to die. Pretty good CG work after the mess that was Berserk 2016. Waiting to see how the A plot of spider girl and B plot of the classmates that got good reincarnations will crossover.

Dungeon only I can enter- Trash. Pure aughts period anime trash. Not an isekai but a video game style fantasy where MC-kun finds a secret dungeon where a trapped super heroine bestows him the ability to make, edit or transfer RPG skills but has to pay in points that are recharged by being horny on main. Don’t watch it but I will watch it till I get bored of it.

No John’s Tomozaki- A girl tells a smash bros player to take a bath and put on some clean clothes. So far seems to be a life guide to tell gamers how to get a social life. Not horrible so far but could go a little harder. Characters aren’t completely flat.

Wonder Egg Priority- By the first episode alone I would say this might be FlippFlappers but if Kyoani made it. Kyoani didn’t make it but it’s very much pulling from their style and visual languages but much more fantastic and abstract with its material. Looking forward to see where it goes.

Back Arrow- Director of Code Geass and Writter of Gurren Lagaan sounds like a possibly fun combo but I’m not sure if it’s working quite yet. First episode was maybe to dense for how it tried to frame what its setting up. Second episode felt better now that it has some room to breathe. It doesn’t look as dumb and energetic that the writting feels like it wants but is still kinda dumb. Cowboy town in the middle of magic fantasy kingdom and warring states asian fusion kingdom has to deal with a himbo who fell from the sky and there’s robots. We’ll see if it can bring up the energy a bit.

There’s a few more I want to check out but man this season is heavy. Glad to see YuruCamp and Re:Zero back in my rotation.

CHARS SISTER IS THE BEST

I now think the original series is better than the movies or the Origin even though it’s taken me 2 and a half years to watch like…half of it.

The Char stuff is cool in the Origin but I think Amuro only really works in the original series, just seeing this kid develop PTSD is surprisingly affecting and well done and I think the movies kinda gloss over it. Seeing him and the rest of the cast break down as the war progresses made me go oh yeah, this must be what made this show special back then. And many of my favorite parts have been brief moments that underline how grim all that shit is.

Or the hamburger, the hamburger’s great too.

Though yeah it’s taken me forever to watch this much of the series and who knows if I’ll even finish it – I know how it all ends and watching all these folks die really isn’t helping my mood any – so I’m not recommending anyone else do it. There’s plenty of fun moments in the other versions and they all look better and they’re way shorter so may as well save some time and see Char do some cool stuff and fall in love with Big Zam. Just wanted to confess that I am now pro-TV show, kinda.

yeah

Amuro’s a good character. He’s designed not to be likable but as a stab at what a ‘child genius’ looks like. He’s arrogant, closed-off, and attracts people who want to get close to him which he has grown accustomed to taking for granted. At the same time, they don’t deny his skills or value, but he starts to deal with how isolated he becomes and eventually grows up, by choosing it for himself and willingly separating from people who care.

From that perspective, you can argue it falls into tortured dude genius fallacies but they had to start from the basic structure of robot anime; the indispensable boy, and they choose to just show how it hurts everyone.

i just like how camille handles ptsd more, its a lot more relatable on a personal level. im enjoying contextualizing my Anime Enemy amaro through the movie. its a little more serious than i expected which is great, but i had to take a break 2 hours into the first one, its why I’m not watching the show. it just doesn’t hold my attention (ITS THE UGLY ROBOT I HATE THE GUNDAM IM SORRY!!!)

OMG THOUGH the guncannon is so cute who knew if you just put a gundam in a union suit it could be so fucking cute

i can see myself long down the line coming back to the show and appreciating it a lot more, but i got into gundam like, what feels like yesterday. let me be camille and steal the gundam and act like i came up with everything first and hate the person who did it before who i have way more in common with than i want to admit and think iron blooded orphans robots look cool as heck look im building a skeleton right now

It brings me great joy that we have had similar Paths Through And Feelings About Gundam

Also that kit fucking rocks, I kinda wanted to get a second one and only construct the skeleton cuz it was so hot

Yeah I thought kamille was a stronger character with a handle on ptsd which…made more sense for me. which is why the original series always felt like a prologue for zeta to me rather than its own worthy thing.

im afraid the three of you, like gundam x, are cancelled

On that note, for those wanting a slightly different take on Amuro, Gundam X’s Jamil Neate is basically Amuro going Quattro route.
