Legit concern. I’m not familiar with the book or the other adaptations other than by reputation. I have no idea how much the series follows any of the plot of Komatsu’s novel, but I understand it ranges in scope and is all about technical detail. This is all focused on one family (almost Spielbergian), and based on what’s happening, I’d be surprised if it’s diverged from everything but the core plot conceit.
4 episodes in, it’s a continuation of Yuasa and company’s interest in the last few years of drawing out a more diverse and inclusive Japan with its cast of characters. It’s also (co-?)directed by Pyeon-Gang Ho, a Korean woman who’s been working with Yuasa and Choi for some time. (Ho is credited as “series director” while Yuasa is credited as “kantoku” and I have no idea what this implies as to their actual roles on the show.)
odds are it’s some kind of “chief director” role, similar to, for example, how Shingo Natsume directed Space Dandy but Watanabe had his hands in all aspects
I can confirm that it is not overly jingoistic, and in fact there is one subplot in one episode (5 or 6) that explicitly tells the ethnocentric Japanese crowd (the 100% Japanese blood only types) to fuck off, which I appreciated. They are definitely seen as bad.
It’s a strange show overall but I am really glad I watched it.
Meant to note Yesterday, but Japan Sinks 2020 also has two great moments featuring Hiroshi Yoshimura’s Green, which is not something I was expecting but it was lovely.
Justice League Action feels like it splits the difference between Brave and the Bold and the Bruce Tim shows. Nice pulls like space cabbie and and lobo and Swamp Thing out the gate. Really fun episodic cartooning.
i learned today that there was an animated show on HBO called “animals” that was produced by the duplass brothers, ran for 3 seasons from 2015-2018, and featured (in what i presume are cameos) by like basically every “cool” comedy person and many other super famous actors too, and i have literally never heard anyone ever say anything about it or acknowledge that it exists
animals feels like a show you only know exists if you listen to too many comedy podcasts
for some reason i know that they changed formats in one season to have live action humans looking at the cartoon animals through a complex surveillance system
the only thing i think i have seen from this show are the raps out of context
I remember finding out about this from some comedy podcast. I guess a lot of the performances were recorded, like, years earlier, and when it finally hit some people had completely forgotten they’d done it, or something, iirc.
as someone who loved ren and stimpy and even has a favorite episode of adult party cartoon why would you make a show where you have to specify “the creator is not involved and he will not receive any money from this” like just let it die
i feel like there have been so many cartoons since ren and stimpy in the spirit of ren and stimpy that are better than ren and stimpy
