Finished BNA today. It definitely feels like they dragged out the bones of the Promare TV draft they had and gave it a new coat of paint. Still a lot of fun.

I saw the BNA and uh
I think it is a perfectly fine cartoon show telling a silly anime plot and the designs and world are cool
I think it is a bad discourse on human/race relations because it falls into the trap that every kind of furry or furry-adjacent race parable falls into where one side is inherently more violent and then when you extrapolate that out it becomes uhhhh and maybe we should stop using animal-people to make points on race

has gene catlow truly taught us nothing?
I watched Blade of the Immortal over two days and I can’t really recommend it in good faith because there are multiple scenes of (tw): sexual assault/rape that are wholly unnecessary.
What I do like is that 90% of the time some bad-ass looking guy gets introduced, where other anime would at least indulge in a short-but-intense battle, most of these guys just get fuckin’ iced in a flash. Like it’s hilarious how much effort went into some of these character designs for guys that don’t get more than a few minutes of screen time.
Even the protagonist, one-eyed immortal samurai that he is, gets rekt constantly. He’s famed for killing 100 samurai (a feat accomplished before he became immortal) but he’s just constantly outclassed by nearly every named character he’s pitted against. You keep thinking “okay this time he won’t get his ass handed to him” but nope!
Yeah don’t watch this unless you’re really jonesing for some Ninja Scroll vibes (with all that entails including the problematic bits)

Yeah everything I’ve heard is the anime doesn’t compare well to the manga. And part of why I never really bothered to confirm first hand is because I love Samura’s art and it has the whole sketchy styling going on that just can’t really translate well to animation.

i watched the first four episodes of the digimon adventure remake
it’s aimed at nostalgic millenials, rather than current kids, and it’s interesting to see a franchise of this type freed from the weekly encounter toy ad structure. it’s also interesting that though the characters are kids like in the original, the threats they overcome are ones that would scare adults, like knowing their family members are trapped on a train during a terrorist attack, or a nuclear missile being accidentally launched.
there’s also no need to slowly build up to the main digimon attaining their bigger, more powerful forms, since their appearance isn’t tied to toy releases, nor is it a surprise. so evolutions are happening right from the start, and since the first arc is a remake of the movie bokura no war game, you even get a fusion character within these first few episodes.
i’m interested to see how it continues~

i suspected from the first time i saw the stop motion OP that this series was going to be extremely my shit. i’m reading into it a critique of toxic masculinity via anime furries and that’s great, but more importantly it’s Teen Drama via anime furries and im so here for it. it’s Degrassi, but for ME
i love Legoshi. and how obvious it is that both Haru and Rouis are hitting on him and he doesn’t get it. every scene with him and Rouis is the most melodramatic delicious queer tension and i love it to bits
the 3D animation looks great and is so well used i see a lot of little micro expressions and nuances in it

I didn’t realize that Netflix had just up and dropped Yuasa and the Science Saru crew’s new series Japan Sinks 2020 a few days ago. Watched the first couple. Stylistically this is apparently a lot straighter than most of SS’s stuff, but I’m really interested in how it’s approaching apocalyptic disaster.
I’m real worried because the original Japan Sinks is reactionary jingoistic propaganda so it seems like a weird project for Yuasa to take on

I’ve seen it, along with a handful of other Minoru Kawasaki movies. I don’t remember it super well, except that a lot of the jokes were cheap stereotypes and it felt, Idunno, chintzy (I liked Kawasaki’s film The Calamari Wrestler back in the day, but it’s been forever since I’ve seen it).
