yeah. as well as the big late change, there’s a bunch of smaller changes that just dont read as well as the original.
I don’t know when I’ll get around to watching the netflix translation, much less the dub. Everything about the new subs makes it seem like the most dry and literal lacking innuendo or poetic liberty - sure I want the most exact original intent, but if you don’t localize an equivalent turn of phrase or the way that character’s personality might speak in english, wtf are you even doing?
Exposition dumps or places with the occasional metaphor like Kaji gives above can be tricky to angle right, now I want to look at the exact dialogue/script for that line. Given his “personally experienced” male approach speaking to a meek adolescent in context of the series elements, I can like the alien specificity beyond just “distance”, only if the original dialogue contains something of that sort.

Short of someone listening and transcribing (I’d fumble an attempt) I found the first dialogue as a rough direct translation, the italicized following it seems fairly close to ADV’s old version.
Kaji: The deputy commander is the one with him all the time. Are you asking around about your father?
- Commander Fuyutsuki is the one who’s always with him. Have you been asking around about your father?
Shinji: I wasn’t with him for a long time…
- I haven’t been around him much.
Kaji: So, you don’t know.
- So, you don’t really know him?
Shinji: But I’ve understood many things about my father recently. About his job, about my mother. So…
- But I’ve learned a lot about him lately. About his work, about my mother. So…
Kaji: That’s wrong. You just feel like you understood. Well, that is why people try to know each other. That’s why life is interesting.
- No, you’re wrong. You only believe that you’ve learned. The fact is that people really don’t understand themselves, much less each other. Understanding one hundred percent of anything is impossible. That’s why we spend so much time trying to understand our own motivations and those of others. That’s what makes life so interesting.
Shinji: Does that fit with your relationship with Misato, too?
- Does that mean that you don’t understand Misato either?
Kaji: Kanojo (she, girlfriend in Japanese) in kanji means a woman far way. For us, women exist on the shore across. It means there’s a river wider and deeper than an ocean between men and women.
- The kanji we use for the word “she” literally means “woman far away”. Women will always be on the distant shore of a great gulf of misunderstanding. The current dividing men and women is deeper than the ocean.
Shinji: I can’t understand grown-ups.
- I don’t understand what being an adult must be like.
they say children instead of child in the dub too, so it sounds as stupid as it reads
thinking about ok k.o. “big reveal” and still cracking up at both the casualness of the initial reveal and the kind of ultimate looney tunes sam and ralph relationship where a hero and villain can kind of come to a chill custody agreement. it’s interesting that on “k.o. vs fink” venomous and shadowy figure still seem to maybe be different people/entities. but it’s also like 50/50 if k.o. is casually like “hey dad” the next time he sees shadowy figure.

i just love that they didn’t even bother to feint the plot twist and made it completely obvious if you were paying attention. Like yeah, the guy whose face looks exactly like that other guy’s face and has the same voice is the same guy, duh. it’s a really good running joke, the show is just giving you a deadpan smirk anytime someone voiced by Steven Ogg shows up

I’m sad that Star vs the Forces of Evil is donezo, but I guess it ended well enough, instead of descending into true mediocrity. Was hoping they were going to do more with Ludo in the end but I think they ran out of time.

I really liked Star vs Evil overall, even if a lot of peeps weren’t fond of how it ended. I was just glad to see Star and Marco finally find the right moment to express their true feelings for each other, because I’m an absolute sucker when characters have believable chemistry and the buildup is patient.
I’d urge anyone curious to power through the first season though, since the animation style is very hyperactive at times and the tone is not quite defined.
I did get slightly annoyed about the age-old trope of using different accents to help define characters though, but I’m an accent dork so whatevs.
It is kinda weird how Star’s parents are British-y and she’s just straight up American
most surprising sonic reference on ok k.o. was honestly having him do the jean ralphio voice for a second
although the chair from the OVA and the bonus world from knuckles chaotix are a close second

carole & tuesday is one of my favorite things this season and if you haven’t watched it yet i think that you should. the most recent ep had a ref to one of my favorite characters from cowboy bebop and it left me feeling a little sad at the end.
in case anyone doesn’t know c & t takes place in the same universe as bebop but about 70 years after the exploits of spike and the gang. there are two girls who wanna make music in a word that dominated by AIs making them with just their acoustic and keyboard and it’s real cute, great to look at and has a really pleasant OST with some cool guest stars.
you’ll have to use a streaming site or a vpn to watch tho because it’s on netflix japan and i guess we can’t have things airing there while having other ( legal ) places also airing it so have your ad blockers ready.

yoooo this sounds completely my shit
Totally referencing this because I’m now in the middle of the second season of March Comes In Like A Lion and it’s been a pretty good companion through the aftermath of an existential crisis. Kiriyama’s life is/was a mess and his journey to get back in touch with his emotions is really touching. And then the second season starts and the studio gets a noticeable budget increase for their animation and we deal with another resonance point, Hina getting picked on at middle school because she got noticed by the popular clique.
I’m glad they gave a sketch of how to play shogi and I’m also glad they understand most people aren’t going to be able to follow the matches, so they really focus on the minds of the players instead as it plays out. They have a good balance in pretty much everything in this series (having a background chorus make the sound FX is unique!).
