Cartoons 3: The Animation

Out of context this must be really bizarre. “why are all these cartoons so depressed?” The final shot is of a pivotal character that’s been hinted at through most of the series and they’re a cartoon frog.

I might get tickets but it seems like it might sell out instantly.

actually, the idea of being in a theater with tons of screaming gen alpha/z viewers during what’s sure to be an emotional roller coaster does not sound like a good time.

The crowd is definitely going to be A Lot but I’m going with eight other people. We might even dress up, this group does cosplay all the time for such as Anime Boston.

I’m so done with people my age or a little younger bitching about the Youngs getting excited for something and acting a little or a lotta cringe. I think I see it a little more than most on SB but, ugh, it’s super deflating to see my own turning on people just like they were when they were teens.

That said I do feel like the crowd being into it makes any viewing twenty times better. People are gonna be a little annoying but they’re also going to be feeling shit, it’s going to be fun to feel it with them. Real psyched for this.

this anime season has been surpisingly packed, so there’s a lot of shows i’m following.

NIPPON SANGOKU
when i first saw PVs for this one i thought it was a movie or an original series but no, its an adaptation. the art style is super charming and the setting/tone are right up my alley. enjoy how most of the main characters are different flavors of psycopaths, apparently. gorgeous use of color

DOROHEDORO SEASON 2
automatic anime of the year just by virtue of being dorohedoro and not being a completely insulting adaptation. just like with season 1, there’s a lot of the manga’s visual distinctiveness there is lost but i feel like the team behind this are aware and able to make good tradeoffs, so i respect it. music is great, too

THE RAMPARTS OF ICE
i liked the author’s other work, “you and i are polar opposites”, so decided to check this out. i don’t know what to make of it, but over the last year i’ve started being more receptive to romcoms and this seems like a cute one.

WITCH HAT ATELIER
so far its nothing short of a dream adaptation. the people making this really care a lot about the insane panelling of the manga and have been super creative is adapting the look and feel of the whole thing.

AKANE-BANASHI
lovely first episode. i really need to get back into this manga, i stopped reading over a year ago

PONKOTSU FUUKI
another fun romcom. i feel like this style of anime . . . i don’t know what to call it, flat-shaded maybe, lots of bright colors? is going to be considered one of the distinctive anime looks of the 2020s in a few years. can’t quite put it into words, but it really feels Of This Time. and i mean it as a compliment, unlike other anime stylistic trends like those barely-legible action scenes studios keeping making for stuff like demon slayer, my hero academia and one piece.

Really nice seeing Bruce Campbell as Satan in the latest Invincible. This was probably recorded before his announcement about his health a while back, but, feels good to hear him in a fun role like this.

Also watched Hoppers with some friends:

And man, I haven’t enjoyed a Pixar movie like that in a while. What a delightful, adorable movie. Extremely well-paced too! Reminded me a bit of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in its pace and comedic hit rate.

Wife looking for a yearning, romance anime. Violet Evergarden is the perfect version of this. Full Metal Panic and Apothecary Diaries fit. “I like when something crazy is happening, too. I don’t know. The romance needs to be the main part.”

My anime club friends - who are my age, and thus, their suggestions are a bit more dipped in nostalgia - suggested:

Fushigi Yuugi
Kamisama Kiss
Fullmoon wo Sagashite
When From Far Away and Red River (when they get released)
Chrono Crusade
Harukanaru Toki no Naka de ~Hachiyou Shou~ (based on a dating Sim so it actually has 8 endings)

arakawa under the bridge
princess jellyfish
Ore Monogatari

All responses are hers:

First of all, thank you so much.

Never seen them, so maybe, but I don’t want them to be young.

Good suggestion, but it’s old hat for me. Maybe I’ll rewatch it…

Too old.

Maybe this is exactly what I want. It looks like something I would have loved as a kid.

~Oh my~ 8 endings? That’s fun…

Remember Food Wars?

This looks good.

Makes faces while looking at screenshots

No, I can’t.

She went with Kamisama Kiss for now.

Anyone recognize this series? Could be a manga, could be an anime, might even be a game, it was in the back of a few Gainax catalogues from 1997:
