C H A O S

this was on my wishlist since its announcement, but this thread and gameplay footage only further convice me that this game is For Me. i’m like, really struggling to find the words for this game but i feel passionately about it without having played it yet.

i’m expecting this to fill the hole in me that ys 8 failed to do and i really don’t think it can disappoint me that badly

It was definitely the no-spotify that killed my enjoyment. The actual soundtrack is generic final fantasy orchestra. I’m very happy to have it behind me.

Also my free time being so limited it was draining. I could feel my brain switching to only wanting the next baffling thing to happen.

Using lances was almost fun. The Axe was horrible.

A youtube video title described the cutscenes as Jack hitting the skip button. Which would explain their pacing sometimes.

maybe the demo was just the easy stuff! good to know!

I got a PS5 copy of this last week and started playing it last night. Seems like difficulty does ramp up significantly after the three levels featured in the launch demo, so no complaints here playing on the Hard difficulty.

I don’t think there are very many games that have as satisfying loot piñata finisher animations as this game. I just love seeing enemies turn into crystal and explode into items all the damn time, and it looks even better in HDR. Feels like the game runs a lot smoother now with the VRR mode forced on too.

This game is everything I had hoped and dreamed it would be and its combat is so much more satisfying than FFXV or FF7R that I hope Square-Enix learns a thing or two

Interesting because I found the combat miserable and stiff. Too much watching long animations play out with no egress.

And I thought FF7R had a fantastic combat system.

same, though i’d also grudgingly take it over xv/7r (the latter i only found slightly more coherent than xv, maybe i’ll give it another go on pc when it isn’t £70. both of those games make me feel 90 years old)
i went in expecting a reskinned nioh and this just wasn’t as good, agree it’s very stiff

Wow this is the one game that has stuff that actually looks like Amano art?

I haven’t played Stranger of Paradise yet, but considering Team Ninja also made Dissidia NT I would not be surprised if they are reusing and upgrading character assets from that game for this. They certainly look very similar.

I kind of want to play this now

I picked up the PS4 copy for $24 and got the free PS5 download with it and I’ve been having a great time. An easy Souls-like but with original FF-Amano style fantasy designs but with the stupidest best dialogue and meta narrative shenanigans is soooo totally up my alley.

I’m at the Flying Fortress now? I barely understand what dismantling does or leveling up equipment. I just dismantle anything that’s 1 star rating or doesn’t have a buff to a class. Any tips? I use the Lancer and Maurader but switched to leveling Mage/Black Mage bc I read they’re really useful later.

Other thoughts about the game: some of these level designs are so ducking bad, I ran around lost and did circles in them multiple times because they’re so non-descript and recycle assets that end up making areas look identical. The castle top, the rain forest, the pirate cave - I got lost in them all so badly I was crying. Doesn’t help that there’s no map and getting into fights spins me around so much that I foget where I came from and I end up going the wrong way forever until I come back upon the starting save cube again. It’s some real late PS2/early PS3 game energy.

On the other hand, Jack dresses in some of the dumbest but also best outfits and each stage gives him a new glam so every level is worth it

My favorite part of playing is that at no point do I ever think that Jack could possibly ever be a “good guy”

He literally beats fishmen half to death with his fists and then lifts them over his head and rips their spines in half, showering himself in their fish juices (censored as crystals)

Even with like regular normal human people that are questionably “bad” like the pirates, he just guts them with no guilt, slaughters them like they were fresh beef and Jack was the grinder

And then his teammates laugh it off, saying things like, “whoa Jack save some for the rest of us!” and then they all laugh before they run around in circles in the next level
