The appeal is 100% about peter Falk playing off the guest in an episode. Like, you have a parade of great character actors up against Columbo and watching the two of them interact is what’s fun.

Sure every episode has largely the same structure, but the episode with Leonard Nemoy’s utterly cold calculating doctor is very different from the warm likeable winemaker played by Donald Pleasance.

Also the shonen manga mind game resolution to most episodes is really fun, IMO.

The structure is really good because watching columbo solve these murders is a suspenseful mystery on its own, too. It subverts the cozy mystery structure by telling you the solution from the start so it has to engage you with good acting and clever scripts
