Tbh my first draft of the tweet didn’t have the bit about cops but I accidentally posted it in the mini console thread. After I deleted it, I pasted it here but Discourse thought it was too identical to the post I’d just deleted. I had to add something so I added cops.
But you’re right and here’s where I am embarrassed to admit that that’s what I chose to add maybe partly because I was hoping to not have to read any responses that were like “yeah, but cops tho.”
I like a lot of cop media. I even like some that posit the cops as the good guys.
yeah I really do feel like being solidly on the side of “cops bad” and also wanting to discuss how their portrayal in media has changed and does or doesn’t help their perception does not necessitate having to say “oh yeah but the cop game I’m definitely gonna play, hmmm I just don’t know!” but then I would
It’s also linked to labor militancy somehow. Early 20th c. cops are basically Pinkertons keeping down the little guy. It’s another trick of history book liberalization that we recognize militant labor of this era as heroic but package it in this little “back then” box that has no application to anything that’s happened to our society in living memory
its an ineffective packaging because all the kids see these historic ‘important labor movements stuff’ and just forget to note that its supposed to only exist in a ‘back then’ context
