Okay now show me Witcher 3.
sir, I don’t know what you’re talking about
they showed off the hottest games of today and yesteryear, like Fuzion Frenzy, that you can now play with the hottest features like 4k and a share button
Don’t forget Hellblade 2! Just pretend that’s what every next gen game looks like.
dark and moody?
and that is what i always think about when someone dreams of streaming games.
=> forget it, give me an offline version or it is gambling whether it’ll actually be working or a bugfest (no, not EDF)
it would be cool instead if every next-gen game looked like Ori and uses the power to make me guess if what I’m seeing is 2D art or a 3D model instead of me looking at things and being able to identify what’s what
also they should all have a dumb traversal mechanic involving headbutting shit
One thing I’ve always been curious about but don’t see get talked about much is how much sound can improve from generation to generation. Is any of this going lead to more varied sound effects? More realistic acoustics? Or is the tech not the limiting factor here?
sound tech hasn’t done a lot ever since Creative buried Aureal with lawsuits
what AMD/MS/probably Sony are implementing is like ray tracing, but with sound, which is going to go a way towards creating a more realistic soundscape w/r/t height and distance instead of a simple “far away thing is quiet, close thing is louder”
yeah we’re still looking for a non-faked SFX occlusion solution that doesn’t blow up any machine trying to run it
right now we’re doing our best with EQ/reverb models at distance but the only games that are really interested in actual occlusion are the ones that need it to the point of footstep tracking like r6 siege or whatever, and at that point you’re running your own solution that feeds into whatever voice priority system you’ve created for messaging prominent game stuff like overwatch has
and realism doesn’t necessarily connote a “good” sound design, since you’re mostly concerned with messaging on the sound front. so if you have the most realistic distance attenuation model in existence but the player can’t really perceive how far away the sound is in relation to the rest of the stuff happening around them, you’re going to throw that out for an “unrealistic” attenuation curve that better messages what you’re trying to say
the other thing that’s kind of interesting is what’s happening around ambisonics, but that’s more of a VR thing
it’s basically an ambience file that allows us to set up a single instance of an ambience that can then have spatialized elements without us having to set up that spatialization on our end, which should allow for much cheaper ambience setups instead of us having to throw in a bunch of instances of spatialized sounds that are all eating up CPU as they’re updating themselves in relation to the listener on the camera
but the quality hit you take on setting those up is pretty immense atm - since quest is a thing and it is just less powerful than rift setups we have to take that hit, but it’s not ideal
that said they took the headphones off the headset so it’s not like you’ll notice any drop in quality anyway oops
Oh, thanks for the lowdown spacetown. You say realism doesn’t necessarily mean good sound design, but just wait for next gen where we’ll get retro game ports with realistic, surround sound.
I’m pretty sure Sony/Cerny/Soerny brought this up in one of those early Wired articles so I think this must be a general thing we’ll see across the board next gen. Sony also presented 3D Audio as one of those PS5 bullet points in their CES conference, so maybe they’ll be pushing to make that standard across all games instead of just Sony games.
Spermy? S-, oh.
It probably is that simple but I’d guess reasonably fast load times is the tricky bit. Maybe they have a small high end ssd acting as a running games cache or some other hardware trick
You can load 10gb off an nvme ssd pretty dang fast
SeXbox allows developers to portion off a chunk of SSD space as basically a private pagefile for that game to use as extra RAM, so I imagine they just write the full game state out to that and pick it back up later
Tomorrow Sony’s putting up a video recording of their planned GDC presentation on the PS5. I guess the Xbox post must have been originally for GDC too. I’m hoping they have Cerny talking in an empty hall.
A show of con Cerny in these trying times
