yeah, it’s more a pacing concern at that point, right? getting into quick jRPG battles all the time is not fun, getting into quick action combats is a little moreso. if the encounter rate is lower, I’d love them to be tougher, but if it’s high, hmmm
Counterpoint: Dragon Quest is pretty fun even though it’s a ton of quick jRPG battles.
oh I absolutely adored DQ11 in large part because it let me run through every big area fighting almost zero battles
I do like that you can avoid them in XI. Early in the series, that’s practically all there is to do though and I feel like it’s made enjoyable in a meditative fashion. That might not be your cup of tea though.
yeah anything described as “meditative” I find I can’t stand
Yeah I imagine they won’t be totally random encounters, but we’ll have to see once it gets released. But since totally randoms haven’t been in the series since original 2, I can’t imagine they would revert to that at this point.
jrpgs are good, actually
in spite of their turn based battle systems
are turn based battles meditative or are they brain rinsing? is there a difference?
it feels good to perform a repetitive task and slowly accumulate power and resources. I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong or even bad about “numbers go up”. I’m not going to feel guilty about that good feeling, however depraved and cynical its implementation often is.
but a lot of jrpgs are annoying because they lean on this specific gameplay loop so heavily and don’t have much self awareness about how it’s dressed up, but even in that case I don’t think it’s always a bad thing. it can still be fun to do stupid thing and get the stupid dopamine release, especially if the music is good.
there are many bad jrpgs, but how many bad jrpgs also have good music? not a rhetorical question. secret of mana I guess is a “bad” action rpg but the music is so good that it’s still a nice time to play it.
mother and mother 2 are often quite cynical implementations of the basic dragon quest gameplay loop but the music and storytelling are delightful/engaging/weird enough for it all to work together quite well.
the first breath of fire is a fairly tedious exercise in war of attrition style fights and sludgey character progression, and even that game is fairly enjoyable on its own terms (even if it isn’t very good overall)
in conclusion my favorite jrpg is mystical ninja starring goemon for the nintendo 64
play saga scarlet grace
Can’t help but be little disappointed when the news thread suddenly got like 100 new posts over night and it’s not about SEGA having just announced they are going to make consoles again or something.
I should have known what would happen when I said I was excited for turn-based battles in Yakuza. Good conversation though.
Good conversation sucks… OR DOES IT???
i had to edit your post cuz you got the format wrong mikey its fixed now
i like turn based battles if they work really hard on a gimmick to make them seperate from other turn based battles I LOVE THE JUDGEMENT RING OF FATE or whatever its called in shadow hearts
i also like when there’s turn based battles and they actively prevent you from grinding a shit ton, like the experience drop off in lost odyssey
i was mildly sceptical about turn based battles in yakuza, but i was willing to keep an open mind.
i’m not playing a videogame where you have to go to the fucking jobcentre though, unless it’s to commit a massacre.
what’s the point of being in the yakuza if you still gotta get a job
There’s a demo y’all…
is it legal for me to start with this one or
yes its about a new protag in a new location with some appearances by old yakuza characters
