The thing about the whole series is like every one has been pretty good about filling in the relevant backstory from previous games (though often there isn’t a lot), except hilariously, Zero, where a lot of people jumped on, which made pretty regular references to stuff from the whole rest of the series, with very little indicator that it was doing that. And which has an endlessly depressing ending if you played Yakuza 1 (and not Kiwami).
But yeah, just jump on wherever, otherwise.

What controllers work with this thing, fuck them for giving us the three button instead of the six
The Retro-bit USB controllers, including Saturn, work, and I think their wireless do too. It might just be any normal USB controller?
I’m 99% Sure it’s just retrobit that works, and possibly only a subset of those at that, unfortunately. 
and also you want one of the new retro-bit controllers where the d-pad actually fucking works (allegedly)

the graphics look cool but im wondering about the navigation/traversal they SAY its one bit so youd just click around but they also say REAL BUSHCRAFT NAVIGATION and hmm
although i am curious about this systemic survival that doesn’t have meters. if it can fool me that im not playing one of those games where you’re always dying and healing then hmmm maybe
it looks like it wants to be an Annihilation game, which I’ve started thinking of as an anglicized, ecosystem-focused variant of Stalker (all media)
