we got this game at launch so I wonder if I still have my cartridge… it’s almost certainly one of the first run.
i’ve always wanted to revisit SotE. i remember renting it when it came out and having a really awful time with it. in retrospect, i wonder how much of that was the actual game and how much was my (at that point) unfamiliarity with the N64 controller and moving through 3D space in an action setting. it does indeed look like it was ahead of its time in some ways, based on the DF Retro vid.
enter the code! IF IT WORKS GIVE IT TO ME
the game was neat, it just had BIZARRE controls (like reversing your inputs once you hook a AT AT walker) and some weirdo levels (the junkyard level thats just a boss fight was impossible til i learned the trick)
i should watch the digital foundry video
i went through all of SotE recently (some time in 2018) and it is absolutely fantastic. probably a top 10 N64 game?
it is ridiculously difficult on the harder difficulties, though
big levels are always good, although I think Shadows of the Empire should always be considered next to the much more ambitious Jedi Knight
With the caveat that you need the 2016 or newer Xbone pad with Bluetooth or plug it in to the dongle’s USB A port.
I have used both of these and now I’m mad lol
there’s so much you can achieve in life by being irrationally hesitant to spend twenty bucks
I think Shadows of the Empire was the first game that I deliberately cheesed my way through every boss fight. No ragrets
They’re both pretty ambitious tbh, but in different ways.
Jedi Knight works better and has more polish, but the jankiness of sote almost makes it feel more impressive to me. Like how many features had to be invented from scratch for that game, versus the mostly iterative improvements on earlier fps games in Jedi Knight.
The sheer variety in sote is even more remarkable when you compare it to other early n64 games.
Like for a long time I had only that, Mario kart, and Mario 64
SotE has a special place in my heart for having the ur Battle of Hoth level but also I don’t want to play it again because I know the snapback-style of aiming would drive me up the wall
I know this would change everything because the Rare Replay version of Jet Force Gemini makes the simple change from auto-centering to a more modern control method and suddenly the game is great and playable
yeah the last level is fucking BULLSHIT on the two hardest difficulties!!! ARGH
one of the reasons i got into destiny 1 was because the tower reminded me of shadows of the empire
anyway its one of the like, ten games im actually good at so of course its my favorite
Videoball Final Tune announcement.
Not sure if this is real or not, someone should DM Tim the requested picture and find out.
I really did not like SotE outside of the hoth level everyone loves
even final fantasy xiv is like, go daphny, chase your dreams
EDIT: i watched the shadows of the empire digital foundry video and they didnt talk about how only the first run of carts had the full debug mode
I never played SotE but I had a friend in sixth grade who raved about for like a week back when it came out. I’ll probably emulate it someday.
Also, HOT NEWS: Classic Euro maximalist horizontal shmup Jets ‘n’ Guns is on Switch eshop for $7.
Oh baby, I had a ton of fun with the PC version of this in like 2008. It’s so ugly in such a classic MS-DOS kind of way. I remember it being a great time. I’m tempted to pick it up.
Yeah I played it around the same time. Very homely looking game but all the ship upgrades!
Ooh, shadows of the empire is on GoG. I might have a beer and revisit it tonight.
OK, so I just bought this for Switch and it is WILDLY unreadable undocked. This game was not made for a tiny screen. The maximalist nature of the game means that you are definitely going to miss a ton of important details on a screen this small. It’ll probably be better on a TV, but this is still unfortunate. I should have seen it coming though.
