There you go. It’s all about finding your jam in this game.

Zarya and Pharah seem to be mine (seriously, i get 4 golds as Pharah at least once a night and i feel be because I don’t even think i am really good with her).

also I think it’s important to take some time and get to know every character. You’re gonna get dropped when you dont’ know whats coming at you.

Yeah, I feel Pharah runs things over until you meet a good sniper or 76 or Roadhog (seriously, getting hooked in mid-air is the most frightening thing), and then you have to play lame scared grounded Pharah.

The game’s tickrate is one third of other common FPSes

This explains why faster characters eat bullets unharmed way more often than they probably should. As a Roadhog, I often don’t even bother with Tracers or Lucios unless I can hook them first, because moving they eat point-blank buckshots probably 50% of the time.

My advice is probably to use this to your advantage! Fast characters have an easier time with Roadhogs than it might first appear, just keep on moving!

OW has been known to be 20 tick for a while now (at least 3 or 4 months I think?) and lead to the cool video Blizzard put out about the game’s netcode:

The current position of Blizzard is that public servers will be 20 tick until they change their minds, but you can run 60 tick in private lobbies

I have heard people comparing this game to Brink

is it true

is this my time to shine

If you want more Brink, let me point you to Dirty Bomb, which is the culmination of Splash Damage having made the same basic game from a template 3 times over the course of 15 years

what are the other two times they made it

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (which was canceled, then made free by our gracious Activision overlords) and Enemy Territory:Quake Wars (of which I think the PC version is till in limbo because of Activision and Bethesda giving each other the stink eye)

Admittedly, they didn’t come up with the structure they follow (seeing as their first title was a canceled expansion pack) but they’ve honed in on it and are the only dev team who does that particular kind of MP shooter nowadays

I actually forgot all about the 20 tickrate until I read yesterday that they still hadn’t changed it even for the live game. In fairness, it was known that the beta was 20 tick, and most people were assuming (read: hoping) that was just a temporary measure to mitigate taxing the servers during debugging and whatnot. The hope was that they’d move up to a proper 60 tick during or after the open beta. Instead, their whole ā€˜favor the shooter’ motto feels like it goes out the window against any fast movers - the low tickrate, in combination with their netcode mitigation for dash abilities (~11:20 in the video), is more than noticeable.

They even mentioned the Tracer/Genji dashes by name. It’s like, yeah, that was exactly the problem. Just before writing this, a McCree killed me in admittedly expert fashion, but he ate a point-blank blast via combat roll. On the kill replay, through his eyes, you could even see the buckshot going AROUND his POV.

I don’t know what the fuck a tick is but roadhog literally can’t kill tracer anyway because she can just E out of your hook

Okay, so, if a typical match is six players on Attack, six players on defense, that means technically there’s like 13 different versions of the match running simultaneously: one for each of the players, and the ā€œofficialā€ record of the match on the game server. So on your version of the game, Tracer looks like she’s standing right in front of you, so you blast her in the face with Roadhog, right? Except that on Tracer’s version, she’s already long gone. If my intuition is correct, a ā€œtickā€ is happening every time the server polls each of the players’ game states, reconciles the inconsistencies introduced by lag, and propagates the ā€œactualā€ game state to the players. Tickrate, then, is like Frames Per Second, except it’s actually Game Updates Per Second, really.

Yep, that’s exactly it. I’m not a Hardcore FPS Guy enough to notice the difference, but I can definitely see intuitively how a lower update rate would benefit fast-moving characters. And since I play Lucio, well, I think you know how I objectively feel about this issue.

hey wait a minute I’m 13-3 with roadhog

time to go professional. see you nerds at the ceremony

SECRET TIPS FROM A ROADHOG PRO

every team has a soilder. find that guy and kill them over and over because they can’t beat you ever if you get in. mccree is easy to hook and dies instantly to you but he kills you instantly too if he hits his flashbang thing, so that’s a bit of a wash

you have enough HP to ignore everything to go land a hook on mercy and kill her

you suck against reinhardt but your ult busts the shit out of his siege

you can hook pharrah and reaper out of their ults and if you don’t you should feel bad for letting your team down because you are a bad player and why did you buy this game ok

ur big and fat so go walk into torbjorn’s turret and kill it because you can do that kind of thing. if you have ult you kill it for free too but that’s true for a lot of characters

your hook has a lot longer range than people tend to think. you can get hanzo shitters at distances that they often think are comfortable. same with soldier but if you miss a long distance hook against soldier he will just kill you.

fuck genji and tracer for real

Biggest things that body my Reinhardt right now:

  • Tracers (don’t have to be that good, I’m usually too busy picking which flank to block on to swing at them unless I’m on a cramped control point)
  • Good McCrees (bad ones aren’t too bad, good ones just instagib me)
  • Junkrat’s fucking tire (I am really bad at Fire Striking it to kill it; assuming it isn’t on cooldown from a fruitless lob at a Widowmaker or something)

Played Mercy and she’s like half-fun, half I’m-gonna-have-a-heart-attack-from-the-stress. In organized pubs (or just pubs with good class comp & half a brain) it’s fun to see how I keep things together. In aimless pubs where everyone just roams aimlessly 10 miles apart it’s just kinda depressing. Bonus points if the pub has no tank and the closest I get to a coordinated push is healbotting a Soldier.

My top 3 right now are probably Rein, Mercy, and Salt-Powered Robot. I picked him in a pub once when somebody got dibs on Rein. We won, but I still feel unclean. Yes, he has counters. But unless the enemy pub actually talks to each other he’s just an idiot-proof way to generate death threats. Pick corner where you have LoS on offensive chokepoint. Turret. Hold lmouse. Move when all targets are dead or you suspect someone is actually competent enough to flank you. Repeat until tank. Enjoy POTG and hope nobody has your home address ready for SWATing.

the only thing i dislike about bastion is how laser accurate his turret is. it’s literally just point and click, dead. at any range. widowmaker is only a counter because she can headshot him without really exposing herself, not because she outranges him. weak.

I main Junkrat, and I’m still working on ways to counter Mei. The concussion bomb at last second when you’re getting frozen is a good quick escape.

Bastion is a pain in the ass. Junkrat can be useful as a suicide squad. I will use a concussion mine to leap over his range of fire, get literally right next to him, chuck grenades at him, and blow myself up with damage from my own grenades/die from other gunfire so my suicide bombs finish the job. He’s not mobile enough when he’s in turret form to get away fast enough.
