Baby Steps thread.

I played the demo and might give the game another go since it sounds a bit more ironed out.
I like the music!

Who will climb the mountain first?

Feels like this one’s getting a lot more goty-buzz from regular press. I wonder if it’s the effect of it being 3D means its taken a bit more seriously since it feels like Getting Over it was more easily written off by many as streambait/browser game adjacent. Not to say this is Getting Over It 3D, but it seems like the possibility space is much larger and the progression is more high stakes and unique to the player? Also presentationally a bit more palatable than Getting Over It which was more of a stark meditation.

really into this so far.

it’s surprised me how much the 3d/open world changes the dynamic a lot from getting over it and the games that influenced. a lot of the decision making is about whether its worth it to go explore something i think i can see in the distance off the critical path, rather than just finding a direct way forward and honing that.

baby steps put my brain in that very particular focus state where any external distractions make me incredibly disoriented and i can’t easily course correct for a while. thanks brain chemistry!

My Baby Steps update after an hour plus: I can very consistently almost get to the cup. That last step is a tough nut to crack.

go overhead and move your foot out just a smidge past where nathan can balance

my baby steps update

I’m trying to eat all the fruit I find, dude loves overripe bananas apparently

there are so many explicit donkey dicks in this game

Baby Steps is probably game of the year. as much as i love death stranding 2, it probably cost like 1000x more to make; yet BS is effectively every bit as good

they changed the mechanics just slightly from the demo. he uses his hands to balance more and you have to poke out just a bit more before he starts leaning. perfectly timed walking is a little more generous. there are new objects and some stuff has been retextured or had materials swapped out (mud on the first stone bridge gap? snow on the apple tree rock?)

it feels like they gave his legs some inertia that wasn’t present in the demo, too. in the demo, you can turn your camera 180 degrees and then just rapidly tap R/L and he’ll do a twinkle-toes turnaround instantly. now you have to deliberately make actual steps because the degree you press R/L is no longer quite as directly linked to the height of his legs

power-walking up steep grades is less effective than before. you could get past most of the demo sequence breaks just with that technique if you were on point. in general, there are fewer ways to “exploit” the game, but the base movement is ever so slightly more stable.

demo changes tl;dr - very slightly easier to stay upright at first, but some of the techniques my brother and i discovered in the demo have been made harder or eliminated.

someone should make a baby steps thread.

Appreciate the write up of the demo changes as I found the demo a little too much to do basic walking to maintain interest.

i think (baselessly speculate) they saw people playing the demo and wanted to make sure at least more people could get past the initial hurdle so they can experience the joys of falling down a mountain and soiling your onesie

mind, it’s not that much more forgiving - we noticed a change immediately, but it took 15-20 minutes of discussion and revisiting a few areas from the demo to confirm what exactly was different

I got the cup! Now I just need to get it to the fire tower.

I love that the tv in the beginning has a “Are you still watching One Piece?” prompt.

Update 15 minutes later: I almost got to the fire tower then slipped and dropped the cup and slid all the way down the mountain this game is awesome.

At least the cup is still close to the fire tower now.

Well I got the cup and got further up the mountain (looking straight down really helps for taking precise steps on super narrow ledges) but then I slipped again and dropped the cup and now the cup is sliding all the way down the mountain lol.

I listened to the interview Bennet Foddy did with IGN the day or so before the game’s release and he talked about being able run and I was like does he mean literally run and like maybe he wasn’t really saying you can run but I am definitely booking it making these attempts at getting this cup up the mountain.

It’s going to be so satisfying when I accomplish this.

Edit: The cup came to rest halfway down the mountain and I failed in my first attempt to grab it or knock it down further when tumbling down after it. This might take multiple attempts.

I think the coolest technique I’ve figured out is landing on my feet when I drop from a height. If you take a step off the edge of something and quickly pull up your other foot and then hold both triggers so you’re crouched in the air, you can sometimes land perfectly on your feet. I can reliably do this when the drop is only about 6 feet or so

I retrieved the cup on my second attempt. It was on a patch that wasn’t totally covered in mud so I took careful baby steps down the incline making sure my feet only touched the gray patches of rock and not any that had any brown or green on them.

I’m very impressed with the depth to these relatively simple mechanics of just lifting and placing the feet. It’s a long way from QWOP but just as engaging once you find that rhythm. I think I’m reaching a flow state. Starting to feel less challenging and more meditative but I don’t want to speak too soon. Still need to see how the rest of the game is after I get this cup to the fire tower.

the top-down view is different in the full game (higher up, nate’s head blocks your view a bit) versus the demo (basically unobstructed), but the gopro hat restores something closer to the demo view at the cost of having to play entirely in first-person

this is one of the best games ever made by anybody
