Since all the enemies are robots I keep thinking Iron Man is an enemy if he’s not in his default colored skin. Although I think “just recolor them” works best with Iron Man as a concept since that’s always been a thing for him.
Alternate costumes are such a large part of the appeal of super heroes but in a AAA GAAS I can see how anything that’s not a recolor will be classified as premium and cost you $14. I’m sure it’s a lot of work to create full on new costumes at this level of production values, but it feels bad. Especially when all of the re-color skins have to fit in with this semi-realistic art style so there isn’t anything with eye catching colors.
Where is my Subterranean Armor Iron Man?
I am still pissed that Black Sea Venom has never made it into a video game.
Makes it really hard to estimate what you need to feel satisfying; projecting scope is so difficult when everything is this baroquely over-the-top grandiose. Justifying it as salable product is just simpler to think about entirely
This quote and the quote you gave for a character creator are fascinating as a Destiny player. I think most people assume the art pipeline is much shorter.
It’s weird how we’ve landed in a world where massive investments in figuring out hair rendering don’t apply to beards so they look unlit next to gorgeous hair
by the way the hair in this game is excellent but the beards are terrible
When gear reach level 30 they can start having two different stats. So you might have one really strong stat or two averaged out stats. But for some reason on the Minor Artifact (accessory) gear types it will always list two separate lines, even if they’re the same stat. I’m not sure why it’s just for these things. And different colored ISO-8s and Norn Storns are super boring accessory themes too. I don’t even know what an ISO-8 is.
Some of the gear thumbnails look really wild and I wish they were reflected on the character model. What is that gaudy looking shield? And I’d like to see Captain America throwing a wagon wheel around.
I genuinely love the 90s toy aesthetic of the suits you get at the end of the game. They’re the kind that would come with metallic colors, like those Power Ranger The Movie toys. Man they’re so tacky. The only one that looks okay is maybe Kamala’s but even she looks like she’s coming out of the baditude era.
i think the hair is technically excellent but aesthetically ridiculous! everyone looks like a picture in one of the style options from SuperCuts or something
We need a term for the valley you fall down when you model your character’s face on your performance capture actor but the process makes them look like an output of a neural net that ingested a stock photo database
this is a very vague sentiment but my main impression of the character designs in this game is like
OOPS! All Nathan Drakes!!
like, they can’t all just be B-tier syndicated action drama handsome but not sexy chucklefucks can they?
I am sorry for talking so much shit about this game I have not and will never play, I’ve seen every MCU movie and most of them more than once, I have a problem
They actually did look different a long time ago! There was a big backlash after people thought they looked ugly so they all got transformed. My favorite part of this though is that these both are the official, main promo shots of the team and you can barely see Thor in either one.
They aren’t as prominent in the MCU version though, and don’t look like the metal bottom of non-stick pans that have those concentric rings that feel funny to move your finger over.
Actually, Thor is barely in this game in general. Does Crystal Dynamics just really hate Thor or something? If they do, can they please give us a skin of whatever this was:
Looking at the weird size difference in that Thor cover reminded me of how enemies re-size mid battle in this game. When you stun an enemy you can do a canned animation on them called a Takedown to do extra damage and recover health, and you can of course spend real money to buy new Takedown animations. But since the enemies come in different sizes you can visually see big enemies shrink as you start a takedown.
I think every game that uses sync actions has to do this! Even a small size difference from the authored animation will result in body parts clipping through each other. It’s worse in this game because they chose a big size difference in both player characters and enemy characters – which is to say, they made the right choice.
It took us 5 months and meetings with a dozen leads to determine our height range for our current project because everyone was negotiating around how bad this would look. And every one of the dozen meetings cut an inch of variance off
