are any survival games actually good?

What

What is this genre

Is it different from survival horror? Is it survival horror but with no monsters?

Food games

Roguelikes but with half-baked fps mechanics

DayZ???

I’ll vouch for this.

Yes, but now you can build things.

survival horror without the actual horror genre, instead trying to leverage the general shittiness of online gamers previously seen on xbox live

basically
single player survival games are ā€˜check the boxes to not die’ games
multiplayer survival games are asshole simulators
that i’ve seen anyway

i do have the long dark bc i read some glowing reviews but yet to play it, bc backlog, and bc early access

Man screw all of you Don’t Starve is excellent.

Actually I think it’s way more accurate to say that survival games are Minecraft, except without the terrain alteration aspect, i.e. the best part of Minecraft.

I enjoyed Miasmata for a quite a while, but finally lost interest due to the clunkiness. I wanted to love Robison’s Requiem which I bought on GOG, but for some reason I kept dying of dehydration every two minutes. Maybe it was a bug.

Oh, I suppose if that counts as a survival game then there is at least one good one.

The Solus Project came out recently and is an okay survive-'em-up/explore-'em-up/uncover-ancient-alien-truths-'em-up.

Unless you’re specifically talking about stuff like Rust.

In which case, no.

I enjoyed the first Lost in Blue! Is that at all relevant to this thread? I can’t tell.

Was going to post this, wish this was available on the Nintendo eShop or something..

There should be a survival game like this, but where you have to intentionally avoid all rescue attempts because living on a secluded island is like, totally awesome

No, because they’re made largely by lazy hacks with Unity.

man do not knock middleware, it fucking works

unity has a bad reputation because all the good games made with Unity don’t have the Unity logo in the opening splash while all the bad games made with Unity have it first thing

but honestly,

the one ive had the most fun with: Salt because it takes the hackeneyed mechanics that all survival games have (literally, they all have The Same Mechanics,) but also the sailing from windwaker

You may mean something else here, but Lost in Blue is pretty excellent. Like Dragon Warrior without the monsters, sorta.
