I just don’t understand this genre, everything seems really underdesigned and your inevitable death isn’t nearly as interesting and doesn’t have as many variables as in a good traditional roguelike
that said, these are some of the only games on steam that use high-end bespoke engines and have native Linux builds for some reason, so I’m kind of tempted to try one. The long dark has been in early access forever and it’s made by some people who are quasi-local to me so that seems like a safe bet?
I’ve watched youtubes of The Long Dark and while it is quite attractive and suitably difficult it is also incredibly limited in its scope. Eventually you get all the stuff and are like well, I have all the stuff. In other words the default limitless mode seems pointless.
Apparently the real game will have an actual story mode (n.b.: this is one reason I refuse to play early access games), which depending on its story and level design might be worth playing - it might be worth engaging the gradual survival-levelup mechanics if there’s an end in sight. But at the moment it’s so much pointless dithering.
I feel Klei’s Don’t Starve is probably the most functional and attractive to play survival game. The overhead point and click controls means you don’t have to play a halfway functioning FPS game so you just play the “get things and build” game.
