All We Can Do Is Wait (Persona 5)

BUTT ROCK PERSONA 5.

this will actually be better than the main game.

can someone refresh my memory, aside from the egregious “gay panic” scene (which is thankfully brief and incidental to the plot at least), what other “yikes” moments are there in persona 5? I feel like overall persona 4 comes out way worse in terms of doing problematic shit involving sexuality and gender but maybe I’m overlooking something?

My biggest other one is the way the male characters (Ryuji and Morgana and Yosuke) more or less sexually harass Ann, and especially how the player character more or less has to participate in it.

Not that prior Persona games didn’t contain some elements of that. I’d have to go back to play them to remember how bad those parts were. Even if they were technically worse (which I don’t think they were, but again, idk), I think it’s made worse by the first dungeon putting an adult’s sexual harassment and intense objectification of Ann as the inciting incident for the whole justice angle of the game. And the second they’ve punished that first dude, Ann’s “friends” turn around and just heap it on her.

Like, Jesus. Yosuke’s a fucking creep.

Also, the story just sucks.

PS: I wrote this above and think I wanna repost it:

Ryuji’s insistence on calling the maid service is gross. The game makes you do it. There’s a ridiculous moment in Shido’s palace where the Thieves are trying to get a letter of recommendation from an old guy who won’t give them the time of day. The brilliant workaround for this is to make the girls dress in bikinis to get his attention. Everyone then lectures this guy for being a pervert. However, the player has just had one last opportunity to see all the female characters showing off their flesh. It’s a hypocritical moment of having one’s cake and eating it too. In a sense, it’s saying the player (embodied in the game world as a teenage male protagonist) is lucky to have a claim to have access to these women’s bodies. Not cool at all.

Man I was excited for two seconds before I realized that it was a Musou. Oh well I don’t have a Switch anyway

Everytime I play a Musou I am reminded that we need better action RPGs

is hyrule warriors any good? it always looked moderately more interesting than most musou games.

Persona 5 was my favorite of all the post-P2 games in the series and i liked the cast and i thought the way they more-fully integrate the ideas of trauma and breakthrough through therapy metaphorically through the gameplay (rather than sort of just hinting at the Jungian stuff) resonated really strongly with me. also, Japan and the US’ political infrastructures collapsing in similar ways means that some of the ideas feel, uh, topical. also, the explanation is hi-larious and imo kind of awesome.

that said, there’s lots of objectionable stuff in the game which may, as it has for seemingly most people here, undercut any positive messaging for the player.

it’s worth noting i was high af while playing through all 110 hours of P5, so add a little bit of that to my analysis.

i agree with most of what people here say re: analysis of the game’s conflicting and agitating politics, but i ultimately found the game a lot more compelling than P3 or 4.

i like 4 and 5 a lot. i do maybe like 5 more. they’re both real inexplicably awful sometimes, enough that it does cool me on both of them in general. i think of the bad parts of 4 as reaching lower depths than those of 5, though on the other hand 5’s grimy ann-leering kind of floats around for a much longer stretch of the game

it’s too bad, it sometimes feels like there’s a glimmer of interesting thought around gender/sexuality in these games but it’s always immediately squandered all the way to hell

I love p5 mostly cuz of it’s cast. I’m not looking forward to human morgana making more gross comments about ann. I’d rather just have a new persona game by a different director or getting rid of whoever thinks this shit is funny when like, yosuke is more interesting as a Funny Art Man than anything. I played persona 4 a year or two before and it is undoubtedly the worst one I’ve played. Every field trip or w/e had at no point any good parts, it was always making fun of something or somebody in a gross way. and Teddie leers way more at the female cast than like, anybody in persona 3 or 5. idk I played through the whole thing and it was just miserable. I still enjoyed the cast but not because of the writing lol. I didn’t play golden, just the ps2 version. I imagine I’d prolly have a more fun time if I did ig bcuz part of why I enjoyed p5 so much was playing the game itself. except when it gets too long. which is always with every dungeon. but I played on hard and I had a real fun time strategizing alot of the fights. anyways I just like, enjoyed everything about that game more.

I nvr saw the whole “you’re a manipulative asshole” angle of p3 but I haven’t played it in forever. I watched the movies (don’t watch the movies) and it did give the mc more character by making him into an emotional distant traumatized teen. also I only played it with the female mc in p3p which was prolly written better. she had different social links at least.

anyways those are my persona thoughts. I love 3 and 5 but wish they weren’t written by Gross People aka sega atlus basically. anyways if you want a reason to completely dismiss my opinion I related to the tired maid teacher (yikes!)(side rant: it’s dumb that all the social links in p5 basically end with you fighting whoever is the one causing the character trouble in mementos like what kind of character arc resolution is that) and tbh the thing that got me most excited in the p5r trailer was more akechi (yikes!!) and being able to hang out with the velvet room twins (yikes!!!). I stopped caring about Leggy New Character after knowing she wouldn’t be like an alternate female mc

also I have a charm of haru who everyone found boring compared to everyone else

Haru is my favorite. She is the best

Same. Just make Joker’s crossdressing dlc outfit from the dancing game into a new feMC you cowards

Haru was my favorite team member actually maybe?

I’ve never quite gotten this either. Though the way I played was definitely “it’s okay if I can’t progress this social link if I say the wrong thing because if they don’t like me, fuck it, i’ll go make some other friends.” To max all s-links, you def gotta say some things to people you might think are actually bad things to say.

I also haven’t played P3 in forever. I need to play it again. It’d be easiest on PSP, but, damn, I really hate the menu based world navigation in P3P.

Can’t remember if we have a SMT thread but I’m excited for V. Apparently they want to recapture the charm of Nocturne and make a game that reflects contemporary concerns about employment, nuclear weapons and terrorism (in the same way that old SMT reflected Y2K fear).

I haven’t been combing for anything on production or perspective for V after the initial trailer. That sounds like a good stir, it leans with some relevance to renew mainline SMT with t e e t h. P5 did have some upswing moments in its sociopolitics so I trust that long as they don’t get more animu than Final/Apocalyspe was (I’m okay with long as they don’t try to cover the same hip-youth territory of Persona), bringing more contemporary national/world stage issues into the scenario sounds awesome.

Gonna do the SJ redux this year, most def.

Like I said just now in another thread, it’s my favorite musou game. You’d expect it would be the Berserk one but Hyrule just feels way better to play, more polished and fun. I haven’t played many of the DW main games, my last DW game was actually the MMORPG one but from what I’ve heard the spin offs are generally better than the mainline games anyway
