There have been a bunch of Vampire Survivors clones but this one feels slightly fresher than the rest

That bubblewrap popping circle around you is a really good new layer for this kind of game.

I think it’s probably new. Ken Ishii is being credited as composing for C-Smash, while I don’t see him on Cosmic Smash’s staff.

The more I think about it, the more I hope they’ve secretly got the original Cosmic Smash hidden inside there. For one, it would be nice to just have a modern port since I’ve never played it and I’m sure most people in the West haven’t either. Second, third person VR stuff is always super cool, and I think re-creating the space of Cosmic Smash would be a really neat compared to the first person sports view, which many games have already done (even if most probably aren’t as stylish). I don’t know how much the rest of you know about Cosmic Smash (I’m not an expert), but movement and weight look like huge parts it. It’s not like typical VR games where you can be successful by just moving all willy-nilly since they need to accommodate the fast and free movement of person playing the game.

I wonder if any VR game really nails a sense a weight for the player. It sounds like something hard to do.

Man, I love how C-Smash has nailed that Dreamcast aesthetic. I want to see this on a jewel case. (The characters could probably be buffer to match the original game more though).

(This feels like a classic joke I’ve seen a hundred times, but on reflection, I think it was only Half-Life 2)

My vague recollection says Cosmic Smash is about positioning, angles, and timing; closer to weightlessness than weight–I suppose you could say that’s two sides of the same coin. Heavy on style over substance, if anything.

I suspect that a western VR remake is going to feel quite different.

Will it still have the ā€œCosmic Crotchā€ special move. (Actual name.)

Incendiary take but MGS reminds me of Undertale in that there’s a bunch of extended lore and the game will occasionally make you engage in some absolute bullshit, like using a guided rocket to get around an electrified floor

Yeah, it’s a series of minigames in a 3d action-adventure wrapper. Each subsequent game gets less like this and it’s a shame

until they break through with V and make a real, honest, systems game and finally show that they could have been doing this the whole time

Cosmic Smash would have been a better game if they just copy pasted the Virtua Tennis physics.

I’ve got a long road ahead of me…
