Wow. Where did this come from?

Apparently a shadowdrop. More excited by this than Evil Within 2 tbh.

that can’t be real

that looks good

I was under the impression that video games were bad

we gotta have a talk with all these people who keep making games that evoke the feeling of a watching a Burger King ad from 1992

the way in which all these characters are very carefully Almost But Not Quite Anime is making my brain melt

I do think it looks interesting gameplay-wise, but most of the combat the gameplay trailer shows is way less exciting than the 5 seconds of intensely rhythmic boss fight combat right at the very end haha

my nightmare is to finally have my dream fulfilled of syncing everything in the game to beat marker callbacks in FMOD and be tasked with making a game that utilizes this fact but then have all the music be generic guitar-based rock

that’s what this game is

why would you not even consider like, crappy hip hop as your music of choice, much less techno or dnb or house or ANYTHING

yeah i only watched the rest of it because of Victor’s post

Oof, feeling real mixed about the prototype I had that was exactly this that I carried uphill for 2 years against the rest of the studio to get unceremoniously cut by the person who understood it the least

is it mean if i say i think this is an awful couple trailers and an incredibly insipid concept for a game

very interesting visual design, really straight up looks like a cartoon at times… having something “look like a cartoon” and run at 60FPS has an uncanny feeling to it, though. like i’m watching an anime OP at “4K60” that just uses AI upscaling and motion interpolation lol

i know you couldn’t sell a AAA game with too complicated an approach lest you risk alienating too many, but i find it really disappointing that nearly everything “rhythmic” shown in this rhythmic action game is a series of quarter notes lol

You know what not too many game trailers make me feel anything these days so I give it a passing grade

yeah

I’m not going to defend the mainstream American children’s cartoon style (it seems fine but it’s not for me), but on the gameplay, the pitch goes like this: Tying music deeply to action in a way that encourages playfulness has the potential for different flow than combo-chaining. Combo strings can stress memorization skills and there’s a hard transition in skill between beginner reactive play and skilled planned play. Rewarding the player for sticking on beat with synaesthetic feedback can help bridge that gap while promising a very pleasurable experience at high-level play without dropped beats. It also brings up a new type of action challenge - the player doesn’t just have to fight mindless aggression by over-committing to combo strings but needs to think about whether and how to react in a way that doesn’t break the rhythm string in a panic.

watching someone stream this and they’re eating it up but so far it’s been an hour of the same damn pop punk two chord riff with a bunch of two-second stock guitar riffs and "Hey!"s sing-shouted over the track per player input plus god awful self-aware dialogue like, “At the risk of stating the obvious, you don’t want to stand under those giant crushers (I can’t believe I even had to say that …))”

gross lol
