ACTION 5 NEWS with Chuck Scarsdale

I think they’re definitely playing up the throniness bc they prize western audiences but it’s reductive to say that it’s just ripping off game of thrones.

i choose to believe that this still very whack looking thrones fantasy game is an elaborate marketing ploy to hedge against the vast amounts of un-recoverable resources being poured into the 100 hour single-location Costa Del Sol Shenmue game they are secretly releasing under the title Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Part 2, and in that way I support and champion it

couple days late on the news, but the new version of iidx has been released:

the most notable aspect of this release is that iidx is now available in 1080p. i love the idea of a prolific game series holding on to 480p until 2012 and then holding on to 720p for a whole decade after that.

Saw FAITH in the steam new release list today (if you didn’t link the trailer here I would have) and I just love that rotoscope-esque animation they’ve got going on from time to time.

real talk, I am often surprised when people insist on downplaying the extent to which a lot of modern middlebrow low fantasy does bite game of thrones hard, because like, even if there’s a rich genre of inspiration behind it that we’d all rather talk about, you know that’s what these producers think will sell and that’s what got these produced in the first place. sometimes it’s overemphasized in the trailer! sometimes you can feel the writers trying to steer the production just far enough away from game of thrones (which is anyway not terrible) to keep it interesting. but it’s definitely right there on the surface.

Game of thrones just happens to be the latest popular representative of generally bland fantasy aesthetics IMO. Like how would it be different if instead people were comparing it to skyrim. It’s the same stuff. And to say either of those things you need to overlook the parts of ffxvi that aren’t like that. The icons and the crystals and stuff. It’s just final fantasy things… There are still more tight leggings in this than game of thrones or skyrim and that makes it good. This is bardcore

i would prefer they update “eternal 2002” to dizzying hyperpop spectacle but more than any aesthetic objection I’m disinterested in coming at a hybrid action RPG from the RPG end of things. XV and VIIR both felt like playing nier automata with a split second of input latency

otoh FF‘s had a lot of dream teams but XVI’s come from the hell-crucible of rebooting a live game and presumably now have the dull production chops to avoid an implosion and rescue

fwiw i don’t care if they bite game of thrones, i love the ff games i love because they manage to have a lot of heart while still being silly pastiche

Yeah me too. I guess I applaud them for trying something different but I really reacted strongly against both ffxv and ff7r combat system. Turn based RPGs are probably the only kind of current gen games I can play without getting nauseous. But that’s just me I guess

Aesthetically my biggest issue is the style of typefaces they use and have been using in these games since like 12 at least. It clashes particularly hard in this case though. between this and all of the HD remakes also looking terrible I really feel like square has an employee that just hates words and written language and wants us all to suffer

i want the FF game written by this person

the thrones comparisons are giving me marble madness imagining a jrpg paced like the television show. it’s not too far afield of FF’s tragedy/spectacle rollercoaster — trade disc cliffhangers for seasons — but i can’t imagine it working where the protagonists are doing sephiroth violence for fate and destiny and revenge (sephiroth reasons)

realizing pacing has got to be the predominant factor in jrpg experiences. all of the distinct examples in the genre are wildly different

Vagrant Story had the hero’s ass hanging out. I haven’t bothered watching this new FF trailer, but it doesn’t sound like there’s any exposed cheeks.
