final fantasy cribbing from a popular piece of genre media? ne’er would have guessed
Didn’t realize Capcom was making The Evil Within 3 but Day One
I mean if you ignore how the plot is completely different and both FF games have wild anime fantasy shit, and the art direction being much more like Final Fantasy Tactics, FFXII, and Vagrant Story than game of thrones, sure I guess it’s just a game of thrones knockoff because it’s…fantasy with politics in it.
there’s nothing wrong with cribbing from game of thrones. there’s a lot of good stuff in game of thrones. there’s also a lot of bad stuff. I honestly prefer that to cribbing from star wars at this point, which has been the main final fantasy go-to for most of its existence. but final fantasy has always been a pastiche. what’s wrong with throwing something new in the mix? I really like the aesthetic of the world and characters so far.
and honestly as far back as ffvi these games have had varying amounts of political machinations as major plot elements and themes. arguably even as far back as IV. it’s been like two decades since we’ve had a single player classic high fantasy final fantasy let me have this.
(me as I typed that last post)
will happily take something that channels xiv as someone who on a lucky week gets like an hour to play games now
I think there’s more to fantasy plus politics than game of thrones rip off, and this team made an AMAZING game so I’m definitely stoked for it. I totally get poeple who haven’t played or paid attention to ffxiv would think it’s lackluster though.
I’m just excited for people who don’t play mmos to have a creative business unit 3 game
and like everyone else said, it’s better than ripping off star wars for the 600th time
sure but let me make fun of you for it
hell yes
a more fantasy like final fantasy for the playstation 5
I would never deprive anyone of that
It’s styled to look and sound like Game of Thrones. There are shots in the trailer that look like they’re straight out of the TV series. The chances of that being a coincidence are vanishingly small.
Is the fact I’ve never consumed any Game of Thrones media a factor in me enjoying FFXVI’s approach so far?
like the chocobos are from Nausicaa, half the games are Star Wars pastiche, cloud and sephiroth are guts and griffith and jenova lives in akira’s sealed dome, nomura’s designs are hugely inspired by fashion trends
like fair if you’re not down for it but drawing a line at the most recent big fantasy thing is perplexing
bet you it’ll have less incest and sexual assault than game of thrones
wall market is the scrapyard from battle angel alita
I’m just saying: Game of thrones also took those things from older stuff, and FFXVI looks like it’s drawing from a lot of different sources, many of which predate game of thrones.
Like it’s impossible to ignore the massive Berserk influences in the trailer, because basically all Japanese fantasy media post berserk is heavily influenced by Berserk, a highly political low fantasy world that has a lot of similarities to game of thrones (but was first).
I can believe there’s some game of thrones influence but it’s definitely not the only one, or even the predominant one when half the trailer is crazy anime sword fights with elemental monster powers and air juggling.
Oh, I can’t handle chocobos or a lot of the other stuff in FF games, either. I suppose it’s just that everything was so GoT saturated for so long here, pretty recently, and that trailer is just ridiculous with it. The mainstream culture I had to interact with in recent years didn’t hit me over the head with the other aspects you mention, as seen in this trailer, to anywhere near the same degree.
With the mature warning on the trailer I thought at first maybe they were going full on with that too but fortunately so far it looks like no.
