I’m pretty close to the end of the second Great Ace Attorney after taking intermittent pauses through the whole thing, have thoughts I need to untangle but generally I really like this pairing. The first definitely loses a lot of steam for me past the 3rd case for a bunch of reasons. In a general sense, I think the cases get too obvious. I appreciate that they were trying to step away from the two-day investigation-trial structure but the writing & design does not at all make up for the lack of obfuscation. The new mechanics and the ways in which they’re repetitively applied just exacerbated this.
The progression from the first to the second feels very ‘prestige tv show realizes they’re about to get cancelled’ to me. There’s a lot of work done to provide closure on points left loose in the original, but also a lot of clear attempts to remediate & flesh out elements of the original that may have felt underbaked. I think it works really well. Sometimes the authorial hand is a little too transparent in framing revelations as ‘they had it all planned out’ when it’s clearly ‘they had a loose idea of where this could go’. But, like television, having all these characters & mechanics established and the people involved having the time to reflect on what worked and what didn’t results in a much stronger, freer, and more interesting implementation of these ideas.
In doing so, I feel like I generally feel more forgiving towards the first game than I did after finishing it. Which is an impressive success. I wish they didn’t let British people help localize these games tho sometimes they go too far.
I am at a much earlier stage than you (second case) but I am feeling more and more underwhelmed as I progress. The main reason is how incredibly repetitive and verbose the writing has become.
The other reason is that things are rather obvious. In the first case, I felt far ahead of the game.
In the second episode, what’s happening is also quite obvious, and a typical cliche’.
I am not sure if I should go on, everything considered. It depends if it will start becoming much better, right now I am not holding many hopes.
Well, I don’t know if the same will be true for you, but I’ll say for the second games second case I had the same thought but ended up being wrong (I assumed that the issue was a gas leak) and because the game never rly addressed the possibility, it wasn’t till the case was almost over that I had to reconsider (which was honestly kind of unsatisfying).
I’m not sure about the repetition/verbosity, tbh I feel like that’s kind of visible in all the Ace Attorney games to a certain degree. The start is definitly worse because they’re trying to acclimate new players so there’s more tutorialization & exposition, but if the game’s general tone is rubbing u the wrong way I would say no harm in taking a break. For me at least I feel like a lot of the appeal of these games is in the general atmosphere: art, music, etc. So even though I would say it definitely does improve, if you’re losing patience with that stuff might be best to step away & come back if you feel like it later.
I’ve been playing the GAA collection with my wife every night for about 1-2 hours /night for the past month and we don’t ever want it to end. It’s been wonderful
Up to the second game’s second case
The exaggerated English accents and expressions have been a constant challenge from someone who only very sporadically speaks English but they’re fun too
just curious, has anyone itt seen the AceAtt. movie before/after playing the games?
Because i did so yesterday, and even though not having played any title before, was at least aware of the games and their humor/general mechanics, and did enjoy the action and presentation a lot.
Assumingly, it spoils a few cases of multiple games, so not gonna say more aside from be careful before watching.
Damn it the internet sucks now. It’s become very hard to find gifs for Ace Attorney. Grim
I just want pristine high quality rips of Gregson eating infinite fish & chips, Van Zieks crushing a chalice, etc etc. Is that really too much to ask of the world
I originally tried Ace Attorney on GBA in 2004 or so due to an excited Tim Rogers IC review, and was a bit disappointed that some of the coolest plot points he had mentioned were just his headcanon
I’m back to GAA 2, went through cas 2 and 3 specifically after a long pause and I’m really enjoying it again. It’s a lovely detail that that one time a witness with too complicated a name appears Naruhodo doesn’t actually write his name in the court record.
this got me intrigued so i tried looking it up, though i can’t find him talking about plot much.
he does go on about a certain gag involving a sneeze that supposedly plays if you present the wrong evidence at a certain time – which is funny because in all the games i don’t remember there ever being unique dialogue for a wrong choice, and i went through plenty of them as i tried to reverse-engineer what phoenix was so smug about that he couldn’t let me in on
Playing the first trial day of case 4 of the second The Great Ace Attorney, and am really enjoying how consistently competent Ryunosuke and Susato seem, as attorneys. Like, the prosecutors actually seem to be slightly outmatched, especially in this particular case.
On a different note, a hypothesis about the case–please do not confirm or deny: the real killer is Gossip, who is secretly the missong husband of Sholmes’ killer.
Ace Attorney Investigations got a nice facelift, the redrawn sprites are huge and beautiful. I love seeing Edgeworth’s arrogant fucking grin on a big TV.
Animations still have as few frames as before though, which make the pictures feel a lot more stilted. → Mario having 3 frames of walking animations in SMB on the NES is less distracting than Joel Lastofus having 3 frames of walking animations would be
Writing-wise it’s a bit hard to go back to the Ace Attorney B-team’s first game after playing Shu Takemi’s magnum opus (Great Ace Attorney) Playing with my wife and we both agree it’s way worse. Case 3 is just full of bullshit already and I’m dreading all the lategame AA padding this time. Plus the music blows!
