Ace attorney still feels formulaic due to its repeated structure and extreme linearity. It feels entirely too safe to be a lawyer, you the player never have to take risks

With that in mind GAA feels like the best in the series from what I’ve played. The modeling and animation work is just godly (finally better than the sprites!) I was so happy when I saw the 6 jurors in case 3, like oh wow… look at all these brand new models. All at once

The game is rich with flavour, which was particularly absent from the last VN I played (House in Fata Morgana) The England + Japan setting is particularly great, keep the micro-agressions coming

i’m on the third case but taking a little break to play some other things. this made me laugh. i love how he slams his hands down and then looks at them as if he’s still not sure if he knows what he’s doing

every time he looks at his hands i yelp OUCH cus it looks like hes hurting himself. YOU NEED CONFIDENCE TO NOT FEEL THE PAIN

I’ve been playing this the last few days and it’s been wonderful. Since I never played 5, 6 or the Layton crossover it’s been a while so I’m not feeling the formulaic structure inherited from the other games too much, but on the other hand the new deduction minigame became repetitive as soon as it repeated (apart from the case 4 bit where Iris is aping it). I like that handling the jury has turned out to be pretty different the second time around.

Speaking of case 4, it’s only after the trial that it dawned on me that the defendant was a real historical figure.

I’m up to investigation phase 4 of case 5 of the first game (right after you get the representation papers). Ever since the final phase of case 3 I’ve had the feeling that McGilded might be in fact be Moriarty and that hunch is becoming increasingly plausible.

I’ve gotta say it’s looking real good for a 3DS port,wouldn’t guess it’s one. Also the music and characters are really wonderful. I thought Sholmes would get tiresome but he’s revealed depths quite a bit beyond what his first couple of scenes would have led me to believe. Van Zieks is the not obviously non-evil prosecutor ever despite his whole vampire spiel.


Regarding the formulaic structure I really wonder how it might be evolved. Tacking on more minigames, as the series has done up until now, doesn’t really seem like the solution. I was hoping Paradise Killer might present a fresh take on the structure but what a disappointment the trial phase in that one turned out to be. I think Aviary Attorney had multiple valid endings for each trial but I never replayed that one to try a different path.

I got halfway through the first case but I realized I probably should restart on the Japanese version before I get too far in. I played the original three games in Japanese (before they even got localized) and I enjoyed them for the double mental challenge of solving a mystery described to me in a foreign language, also feeling like my hours are well-spent derusting my Japanese, plus a lot of light entertainment to make that feel not too much like studying for an exam.

(The real mystery though is finding the lowest-hassle way to break 3DS region lock or emulate the Japanese ROM)

Literally hacked my 3DS to do this then never played it. The guides for hacking a 3DS are really thorough.

Are you saying this is the first time the games aren’t billingual? Have you tried setting your console language to Japanese?

Yeah the Switch version I got on the US online store is exclusively English text, regardless of system language. The only language toggle is to return the voice snippets to Japanese.

I got up to case 5 in Great Ace Attorney 1, but then I showed the game to my wife and am now waiting for her to catch up so we can solve the cases together. She’s playing a lot for a non-gamer young parent though (about 3 hours per day) so I shouldn’t have to wait too long.

The game owns… I haven’t liked a game in this series this much since the very first one One of the cases here (case 3) is an all-time best IMO. It actually threw a wrench into the predictable Ace Attorney formula with the mid-case evidence tempering and might be worth the price of admission alone

My understanding is that Takumi was not involved in Phoenix Wright games after the first trilogy, and then returned for The Great Ace Attorney… is it correct?

Almost, he wasn’t involved after the fourth one because he started working on the Layton spinoff, and then on Great Ace Attorney.

Meanwhile the « B team » that worked on the Edgeworth games took over the main series.

After a long pause I got back to it and finished case 5 of the first GAA game. I’m really impressed they made me like Graydon in the end because I really felt I hated him so much he could never be a sympathetic figure. Kinda disappointed though that a climactic piece of evidence is yet again delivered at the last minute to be used right in the next interaction (especially since I’d figured the cat door thing pretty much the first time I saw the door in the investigation), that specific form of twist always felt like a cop-out to me.

I’ve also gone through the first case of the second game. I was wondering how they’d justify the tutorial and they didn’t disappoint, that worked very well (also for the purpose of refreshing some essential elements of the general plotline). I’m a bit more disappointed by case 2 so far (just finished inspecting the crime scene) because it’s a flashback to a trial that happened in the middle of the first game only no one ever mentioned it. Before that I was kinda impressed on how the two games seemed to indicate they’d really been built as one game too big to be sold in one piece. At least I’m getting more Soseki, which I guess the devs must like as much as I do. This case is also making me realize how relatively low budget these games must’ve been (in a way, since having two courtrooms and a jury makes them more asset-heavy than the original games) since the asset reuse is becoming really apparent.

I’ll never get tired of the visual gimmick where short witnesses are actually standing on boxes during the trial, which you only notice when there’s a global shot of the courtroom.

I’m still hopeful for McGilded as Moriarty even though case 5 did seem to bring that specific character’s plotline to a close.
