2D Beat 'em Ups that aren't Streets of Rage et al

Skullgirls.

I think Skullgirls runs at 720p?

the sailor moon arcade game came out in 1995, which is later than any of the sailor moon beat em ups on snes and mega drive. despite that, it doesn’t do anything innovative mechanically, just having regualar combos and throws, along with a golden axe-style magic attack that gets more powerful the more crystals you collect before using it
it does have amazing graphics and animation, though.

when you use your magic, you get a nice full screen animation that’s different for each character and each power level

also cool stuff like this happens midway through boss fights

there’s these recurring marionette enemies that sometimes throw their heads. they don’t always do it, it tends to happen when there’s other enemies, you’re a long way away and they haven’t taken any damage yet

sometimes tuxedo mask also shows up for no reason

it has girls being friends, though, which is always innovative

still waiting on watermelon to reveal details about their 2D Megadrive brawler. Between that and the unknown Game Center CX MD project that is two fairly high level new games for that console.

I really dug Scott Pilgrim

and
Castle Crashers

The Scott Pilgrim game looks like it was animated by that guy who used to post to IC sometimes… the one with the super-detailed anime pixel art.

I believe Paul Rober(t?)son was involved yes.

and persona and kinuko too!

I thought that was true then forgot and so didn’t say anything! Yeah it’s a real convergence of IC art talent.

Yes, him!

I thouuuuught I remembered Persona working on something related to Scott Pilgrim. Paul Robertson is who comes to mind here, though.

Especially interesting considering that when I watched the movie I basically thought, yeah, that’s Tim Rogers: The Movie.

Yes, Paul, Mariel and I worked on Scott P. We lived in Montreal for a year working on it!

It was a very troubled development. Game came out so well despite it all!

Montreal is super pretty! Did you live in a pretty part, or a part where people were being murdered?

I consider this a Truly Sick Burn

A comparison I would not wish upon my worst enemy.

Well . . . . . . . . maybe.

Is this a good place to ask if anyone else is playing the new River City Ransom for the 3DS?

I got this game at a garage sale along with a bunch of others and was surprised at its quality, not knowing at first that it was by Blizzard. (I think this was when I was playing Warcraft 2 a lot.)

I probably finished this 3-4 times in the arcade. It’s a good one.

This is one that’s definitely worth playing through at least once to see all the variety.

I never played the Genesis version of Altered Beast, but I sure liked the arcade version. Didn’t the home version leave out several of the stages/animal transitions?

My favorite remains Bruce Lee. It’s as much as platformer as it is a beat 'em up, but I think it qualifies.

mega drive altered beast is a lot easier than the arcade version, but i don’t think it leaves out any stages. only the wolf has a proper transformation animation, all the rest just flash really quickly between human and animal.
there’s a fanmade port of bruce lee to the master system, that’s pretty much the same as all the computer versions, but with much nicer graphics.
