2D Beat 'em Ups that aren't Streets of Rage et al

I’m squeamish enough that I can’t handle the newer MKs, but the Project Altered Beast has me morbidly curious. Gotta scratch that kusoge itch. Altered Beast as a whole series is in such a bizarre place in Sega history. Wasn’t it like immediately dated? Though tbf I love the OG Splatterhouse and it has a similar lack of dimension.

gay furry beatemup historians please correct me

It’s tremendously boring to play, look at, and hear, but I think it was a pack-in game for the Genesis, so I guess everyone who got it through those means has magical memories.

i didn’t even get it as a pack in and i love it. my cousins got it one day and we were instantly obsessed and i had to get my own copy too.
the mega drive version is actually a lot more playable than the arcade version, which is an unfair coin eater.
also i don’t think it was ever a pack in in japan, and jp sega fans love it too.
i’m not even exaggerating when i say that i’ve probably completed altered beast md over a hundred times.

What Splatterhouse does have, though, is tons of atmosphere, and some genuinely gross-looking critters.

Classic Blizzard.

I always thought these games looked amazing when I was a kid. That move where you grab two guys from either side with web then smash them together BLEW MY MIND. Also you can play as Venom and he was ssoooo cooooooolllll because it was the 90s and I was like 12

Having landmark superhero comic arcs translated into beltscrollers was something that really fits the 90s.

i started playing zero team and the attention to detail in that game is incredible!

the bad guy on his little boat who sees you fighting the second boss, and goes away to fetch reinforcements

the helicopter that drops you off at the start of stage 3 being seen a little later flying by in the background

it’s so high quality! it’s a shame it’ll never get any kind of recognition except among a very small population of arcade enthusiasts who can only ever play it through piracy

Spawn having Dhalsim moves is an interesting choice.

This reminds me of the PS1 Spawn game that was kiiiind of a beat 'em up?? but also one of those Run Through Corridors and Destroy Containment Units things that were widespread for a while before more developers figured out what to do with 3D level design. Whenever you encounter an opponent, it switches to a fighter-ish set up and locks you into combat, and the music changes to something more action oriented. It is not a good game.

Iirc, there was also a Spawn game for the Dreamcast, but I’m not sure if it was a B-E-U or a fighter.

Dreamcast Spawn was sort of like Powerstone but inside of mini Quake deathmatch levels.

Sounds like Heaven.

Here’s Batman.

Really clunky heaven, but that’s part of the charm.

I heard the Batman Forever PS1 game is secretly awesome, but I’m unconvinced.

If the BF PS1 game is the same as the ST-V game in Mame, then, no, it’s not awesome

It’s pretty hilarious though, befitting of the movie

Never played it, but look at all the numbers popping out of enemies and the mashiness and the garish realism. It actually was ahead of its time!

Also, that bat emblem, damn.

Batman can shrink!?

I’m sold. I like the Narc vibe.

That game is exactly as crazy as I remember it being from the one time I messed around with it. Though the sound wasn’t working in the Mame driver, so powering up came with me just angrily saying “BATMAN!

I maintain that the 16-bit proto-MK Mythologies BF game is actually sort of okay and admit to having beaten it at least once, which requires way more patience than I have had for the past 10 or so years

You know what, MK Mythologies is an okay game too. Just never give me platforming with stick jumping ever again
