2023 Gaming Hopes, Plans or Projects

I’m pretty sure I’ll never make a game.

I want to continue to dial in my sim racing rig. Hopefully I can either reinforce it to contain the feedback from the new wheel base I got or replace it altogether with something more substantial.

I want a better shifter that sticks out ridiculously far and gives more tactile feedback. Also, having a functional reverse gate would be pretty rad, assuming I get something gated. Ideally I can find something that can toggle between gated and sequential like the old G25? shifter.

I want to get my gaming SHIT set up better. Over the years, I’ve acquired so much hardware that is just floating around my house. I need to organize it!

Will I play anything? Probably.

  • Play more little Itch games

  • Finally learn what a visual novel is

  • Write some more weirdo stories about characters in Heat Signature

  • Get farther in DQM Caravan Hearts than I did when I first played it to see if my initial reaction of “it sucks” is justified or if I was just not used to more traditional RPGs

  • Move on from Fortnite as soon as I’m not getting good social energies from it - I want to make sure I’m not playing it to the point of exhaustion like I did with Rocket League

  • Be honest with myself about games I actually want to play. I’m never gonna finish DQXI!! That’s okay!!

  • Play a bunch of shitty PS2 games on stream, to maybe get a better understanding of the platform, since it’s a huge blind spot for me in that era. I feel like the best way to understand a civilization is through its garbage, and game consoles are the same.

  • Stream more in general

  • Finally play Sonic of the Wild

  • Play Dragon Quest Treasures

This is likely too ambitious:

  • Finish Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Trails from Zero, Ys IX, and my second playthrough of Hob
  • Start Chained Echoes
  • Spend more time with Slipstream, Super Star Path, and Rigid Force Redux
  • Take my time with Breath of the Wild 2

Is that a 2023 thing? I should probably knock out the original first.

Yeah it’s scheduled for May 12 release. That reminds me it’s called Tears of the Kingdom not BotW 2 lol.

Possibly taking a few baby steps towards fleshing out my ideas for a survival horror game that has no game over or ammunition, and has the same energy as a Todd Hido photograph of a house.

another thing: i want to keep finding lesser-known games and exposing them to people!

  • Finish implementing throws in my fighting game engine, also script a second character with a more elaborate model. Possibly rewrite the entire character script parser so it is more like an actual parser
  • Finish Rhem 4
  • Finish Elden Ring
  • Finish Xenoblade X and start (and hopefully play through) Xenoblade Not X. Prolly won’t have time to do 2 and 3 but we’ll see
  • Reread both Higurashi and Umineko (that one’s gonna be tricky, it’s two solid weeks of reading)

  • finish making slimegirl for gameboy, and finally get a slimegirl game done (well, a second one)
  • rediscover that fire i had when i wrote whole essays about games every week back in 2020/2021 and kind of lost this year
  • continue improving at fighting games
  • stop holding myself to a ridiculous standard that i can never live up to, so i don’t feel like a big fuck-up when i have setbacks with the previously mentioned things (also: with any sort of event in my life)

I’m trying to broaden my hobbies a bit this year, so I only have 4 things I want to do:

  • Final Fantasy VII Spanish Fan Translation
  • Metal Gear Solids 1, 2, 3, and 5
  • Sonic Frontiers
  • God Hand

I’d like to finish at least two of the projects I’ve been slowly working on for a while now:

  • A new version of a game I made in 2003. 2023 is a natural deadline for it because that will be 20 years later. And a very generous deadline at that, despite it taking a lot more work than I’d expected it to for technical reasons.
  • A short story that I’ve been writing for a couple years now. How long can it possibly take me to write a short story? It’s not even that long a short story. And the funny thing is, I think about the story a lot without actually working on it.

this was the best part of my giuliani “process” by far, in five months I only cleared like two blocks of five days to actually get any writing or coding done, but I kept having great ideas after the initial scoping

Had a journal I was using to explore some suspected repressed anger. I stopped making entries several months ago. Mainly because writing gives my wrist so much grief. Thinking I might set myself a new year task of writing haikus or little 3 panel comics on a daily basis to give myself both less and more to do.

I wrote haiku as a regular practice for two years and it was great. I think it helped me to focus more and reflect. I would suggest not sharing them because I found myself becoming a little too self-conscious once I started to share mine.

Would like to actually release a game this year. I tell myself that every year but i feel my current thing im making is the closest ive gotten to having something id be ok loosing to othr ppl. accumulating ‘skills in the medium’ through sheer force and dumb perseverance, my dreams (hhaa)

nes/older rpgs have a strange emptiness /minimalism to them ive come to appreciate a lot though ive only played a small number of them, want to play some more of them definitely, that and small things from itch

For playing, I’d like to see the project I started back in 2020 of playing every Final Fantasy game through. I almost started XII recently, but the prequel-era-Star-Warsness of the opening cinematic beat me up and left me for dead.

I want to play a lot more small games from Itch and Freem. If I can get back in the habit, I’d like to start writing about them again, but we’re definitely going to put that more in the hopes than the plans or projects column.

I am hype about new Zelda, Final Fantasy XVI, and The Compilation of Final Fantasy VII: Final Fantasy VII Presents Final Fantasy VII Remake 2: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: A Final Fantasy VII Story. For the latter two, I have actually started saving a percentage of my freelance work for a PS5, like I’m a goddamn child.

Games I’ve started and want to go back to and see through to the end: Yakuza 7, Spiritfarer, Sekiro, My Dark Souls II Academia.

Uh, I’m spending most my time replaying Persona 3 for the PS2 right now, and that will realistically keep me occupied until April, so fully expect 2/3 of these things to not happen.

I do want to get back to Spelunky 2 and get to the point where I can do a complete run of some stripe.

As far as game-making goes, I’m starting 2023 off accomplished, releasing a game I started working on in November 2021 on January 9, 2023.

I started too many projects last year and have barely finished any. There are at least three big major projects I’m “actively” working on, and two of them I’ve been working on for like four years, and I’d like to finish at least one. I’d also like to release a few small games made in a short timeframe.

Uh, ok.

  2. Probably beat Cold Steel 4 but not right away
  3. Play another Ys game
  4. Get better at fighting games
  5. Get better at SHMUPS

I want to get good at a fighting game! This year I finally got executing a DP and hadouken (both sides!) down for the most part, so I started to feel a little hopeful about my hopelessness wrt fighting games. I just want to get good enough to not lose miserably every time.

I’d like to play through one JRPG. I’ve picked up a bunch and put them all down. I don’t know! I get bored or distracted real easily when playing those games. Especially if they’re talking to me in ye olde englishe. I’ve been into that Popolocrois, which is p cute and nice so maybe it’ll be that one.

My guy and I always talk about making a game, but always get too ambitious and disappoint ourselves. Gotta learn how to take baby steps and be okay about it! Maybe next year we’ll make a plan and stick to it

Which one are you thinking of? I’m not great at them myself so I’m always looking for similarly skilled players.
