The past few years I made a habit of coming up with some sort of gaming goal or project for the coming year, which usually came down to some kind of list of games to try and get to over the course of the following twelve months. I’ve done an okayish job at sticking with them, although I am prone to coming up with a different idea midway through the year and shifting to that (such as playing through a few hundred indie games from a giant bundle, might have been a bit too intense in retrospect).
That said I don’t have much of one in mind for 2023, for now it is the fairly minor goal of playing one of what I think of as the scary puzzle games (likely a DROD or a Zachlike), one put-off longer narrative-heavy games (perhaps this is the year of Steins;Gate 0), and one of the PC classics I never tried before.
So hey, what are the grand/minimal gaming goals and such the rest of you have in the back of your minds for the coming year, if you write them down we can collectively check up on them in twelve months and despair!
1st loop of ketsui and battle garegga 1ccs + the ffxiii trilogy!!! there are a lot of rpgs i want to play in general… ill probs be doing vagrant story, tactics ogre, digital devil saga 2, strange journey… id like to beat dark souls and bloodborne cause i had such a good time with demons souls plus i think ill play mgs2 3 4 and v as well cause im having such a good time with mgs1.
Play more boardgames, host more RPG sessions for friends, play with new people continuously, involve my gf in all this to the extent she wants to, and make Quake maps.
Goal 1
Play way more games than I did in the hell year of 2022. So much life shit hassled me that I barely got through half the things I wanted to. The goal is my old annual number of 55-60 completions.
Goal 2
Seriously get into emulation with a focus on PS2. OR Figure out a way to get an XAC working on a PS2. This is so I can catchup on the games I missed out. Sky Odyssey, Shinobi, and Nightshade are my starting point but I feel like this is the year where I pivot to mostly playing old shit rather than just what came out in the last 5 years and rereleases. Game recommendations are welcome.
Goal 3
I’d love to have higher quality discussions with people about games since most of the conversations I have with friends/colleagues in daily life are difficult because the person has no familiarity with most of what I’ve played or the conversation ends at: ‘Yeah, [I’ve heard] that game is really cool’. SB has spoiled me for quality of conversation.
Goal 4
Maybe get into Fortnite
Goal 5
Get properly into a fighting game again - play online, learn shit, get better. Kinda eyeing SF6 or Tekken 8 for this.
finish up making horror things at last, it’s been fun but i miss not knowing what i’m doing. i started these because after 10 beautiful postcards i was like “well after this one surely i don’t want to just go on making directionless collage games that fewer and fewer people seem to want to play”, i was wrong, that’s exactly what i want to do. i miss it and i feel jealous now of the weird shit i see on itch or wherever.
i feel like whatever urge i had to play long games has bottomed out, at least for now, i’d like to get back into downloading big tracts of short things and just spending a few days poking around like i did with my to-play list thisyear. that was a lot of fun and kind of unfortunately soured me on continuing to wander endlessly round the same tombs in dragons dogma, although i do like that game.
Hopefully I can scramble to finish Preserving Worlds season 2 by the projected release date (which, thankfully, I don’t think is public knowledge yet, lol).
