10,000 Bulletins: No One Can Stop the Presses! (Part 1)

The other property, pointing in any angle, turned out so important to all 3d movement that Nintendo shipped a thumb nub doily with the DS

Funnily the sensitivity is really important on the secondary stick when used for aiming and cursor control. It’s just bodies that we have no desire to handle gracefully.

And yet they also shipped Metroid: Other M with auto-aim and d-pad movement instead of Sin and Punishment 2’s perfect nunchuck and IR pointer controls

Other M had that control scheme because the director presumed that there was a significant number of lapsed Famicom/NES gamers who stopped playing games because control schemes got too complicated in the 3D era, and that with a simple enough control scheme those people would be willing to sit down and play his auteurial ~Cinematic Masterpiece~.

Whether or not that game was successful by any metric, that philosophy of needing to simplify 3D control lead directly into Mario 3D Land/World.

i always thought it would be very funny and souls-appropriate if equip weight affected jumps and trying to make one of those early “sprint, jump, and pray” leaps in plate would result in your character coming up short & unceremoniously clanking to the ground. even better if you slammed through a wood floor and found a different secret

One of the best moments I had in morrowind was realizing that weight affected speed in a statistical way so I could make an impossible seeming jump easy by emptying out my pockets.

imagine someone trying to jump over a fence and all the pots and pans in their backpack and in their pockets and stuffed into their shirt and hidden in their shoes keep clanking and bopping around and they keep going “God, this should be easy, why can’t I jump over this fence??”

and they just keep clanking away until about 3 minutes later they go “Oh!”

then carefully drop every single pot and pan into a single pile and easily clear the fence, and leave all their pots and pans behind

I’d be into a mod for one of these games that gradually added more ambient inventory clanks at greater volume as your item load increased so by the time you got to the endgame it was just constant deafening CLONK CLONG CLANG CLONG drowning all npc dialogue and you just have to guess at just which guy they want for you to kill. was this the original pitch for the quiet man…

Hrrnngg I keep failing stealth checks because my inventory is dummy thicc and the clank of crafting materials keeps alerting my enemies

oblivion had a funny but probably not intentional mechanic where you could bypass the heavy armor stealth penalty by sneaking around with your shoes off

i’m assuming “if boots == heavy armor” was more performant than calculating equip weight every time you moved near an NPC but the idea of a giant orc in daedric plate tiptoeing around a bunch of armed guards is very funny to me

There was a leak of a glitchy attempt at one before but now a real working mizzurna falls translation patch has been released.

I think their server blades are just Xbox Ones so hopefully they’ll add the whole BC catalog after the beta. There shouldn’t be per-game issues but the licensing might be different.

I tell ya what I could play Viva Piñata on my phone

i will immediately buy an xss if they make their fromsoft catalogue backwards compatible, which they never will

tempted to do this just so I could stream Fable 2 without a capture card, but I can’t tell if you can play that game on PC. :-/

xCloud on PC isn’t out of (actual) beta yet but they said “soon” last month.

Running Stadia inside a browser on the new Xboxes is extremely funny to me, like it only exists to clasp hands behind their back and whistle when the FTC comes knocking or Sony blocks xCloud

Running Discord is cool, though
