protagonist bird wandering around all shirtless like a bit from tuca and bertie

That sounds awesome. In practice it sounds like it could be really irritating until you developed your mental map of all the situations in which you know the trigger isn’t going to be responsive.

bird all just never quite “getting it” or even knowing there is an “it” to get.

My favorite sprinting input in recent times is in Receiver 2, where you have to tap forward repeatedly to sprint which rather faithfully contributes to the state of panic you’re likely in because unless you’re a speedrunner you’re likely sprinting to escape a killdrone. Extra enhancement to panic is remembering too late you have a Colt SAA with which you will shoot yourself in the leg if you so much as shake it unless you’ve cycled it to an empty chamber as per the wikipedia safety instructions in which case the gun will first have a good (read: inevitable) chance of cycling in a full chamber before shooting yourself in the leg)

make sprinting only happen if you scream at your controller

Actually pretty close to the main mechanic of a Frog Fractions 2 level! Main difference is you need to do it to move at all.

I finally finished this game recently and it bothered me that the book wasn’t floating alongside you like the other party members

I mean I did play the drag race mode in NFS Underground with the Donkey Kong bongos and you had the choice of screaming or hyperventilating into the mic

Hopefully it’s as good as the lawn mowing in Bully.

Holding B/Circle to sprint in Dark Souls is fine, even though it requires doing The Claw. But tapping B/Circle while sprinting to then Jump is monstrous. I liked how DS2 made Jump a L3 click action.

Also, yeah, tapping W to sprint in Receiver is wonderfully complicated and a good feeling sensation.

Even as they moved the inputs a few times I always got the sense that sprinting and especially jumping in Souls games was designed to be as painful and clumsy as possible to broadcast that you weren’t supposed to be doing this in plate mail

Everything about Receiver 2’s controls is perfect and revelatory but I think 99.99% of the people who play it will only ever consider them idiosyncratically fitted to the exact game Receiver is rather than what they could be, which is a general set of indicators for Doing It Better

Maybe it’s just because I’m old but I have only ever been able to coax one speed out of any analog stick. I hate those god damned things so much.
