huh…so they 3d scanned everything, google earth mapped photographs to the models, and are using that just for pre-rendered camera transitions? and they photographed everything at a noticeably lower res than the realtime polygon stuff? all of the story stuff is regular full early x360 polygon cinematics? weird.

also seems like a high quantity of…floating in dark featureless void?

it’s like…they tried to solve problems with creative tech, failed, ended up with something that looked different, and are trying to pull value out of that. It doesn’t seem very intentional but it’s something

The environments are kind of cool, but they need to work on those character models, they look like they were pulled out of an entirely different game. Go all out and try to make them look like figures or board game pieces.

I do want to play this Sakaguchi game but I don’t want to have to figure out what Apple Arcade is

can’t wait for the remaster in 20 years where they go back and extract all the detail from the original digital negatives like the late director originally inte

yeah it’s the one thing giving me significant pause, they’re so blandly generic and it stands out even more in such gorgeous environments

wonder if the aesthetic is an attempt to make a game that actually looks like the old model diorama covers for Xanadu, Sorcerian Forever etc

it looks gorgeous and imo a tablet feels like such a cozy format for a non-gacha narrative-driven jrpg that i’ve always been bummed nobody was really trying (including square, who just dump their farmed out already-ugly-on-a-phone ports of old games on there and call it a day)

yeah except the darker reality is it’ll be an AI upscaling fan mod

it’ll be 3D reconstructions of the physical models they originally scanned so you can walk through the dioramas

I think this looks pretty good in motion:

The camera shifts around as you move through the models.

Also, there’s a mechanic where you can bank random encounters to deal with all at once at a later time lol.

that soundtrack is… something

the battle mechanic gimmick looks cooler than it sounds, it’s not just another way of innovating in JRPGs meaning new ways to let you just not play the game

Visuals: comfy physical little figure bonsai dioramas

Music: bargain basement NIN

Sure

kinda feel like the music is more like “The Minibosses, if they made original music” but

hmmm! i am mostly fine with Sakaguchi just sort of making whatever he wants, regardless of whether it’ll be good or not haha. this looks…well, i have an iPad!

but i don’t have Apple Arcade, so

The maps are cool but visually everything else is indistinguishable from every other b-list jrpg

It’s like they all picked the same mouth in picrew or whatever

pretty sure you can still get a free month. i’ll cash it in for this monstrosity at some point. they got a chu chu rocket on there too

i, personally, cannot, since i already used that month when it came out. but yes, i think it’s still offered

You may be still able to get it as part of a trial for the Apple One bundle they launched last fall which includes Apple Arcade?
