It’s let down by being a roguelike imho. Otherwise it’s fine, I guess. Nonessential, for sure.
is there even one of these games that’s close to as good as quake? idk what the point is if any of them aren’t.
I remember seeing a tweet that was like “don’t call them boomer shooters call them gen-executioners” and tbh that’s probably the best possible burn you could drop on ion fury. even putting aside its various controversies, that game’s sense of humor is the most “time capsule” thing about it, and I mean that in the worst way possible.
like… when you pick up cans of soda the console ticker says “LIQUID CRACK!”. did eugene jarvis produce this shit?

the new shadow warrior still looks good
do those games count? I always had the impression they were total reboots and not really trying to recapture the glory days of build engine games or whatever
As an aside… I recently replayed all of the original shadow warrior and I do not think it’s very good. same with the original duke nukem 3D. I’m sorry. I just think they’ve aged poorly in every regard. There’s still a lot to love in terms of how imaginative the level designs are, and how much they got out of the build engine, etc… but like. playing them today the throughline really is just the stale, offensive humor more than anything else. I kinda just don’t trust anyone who overly romanticizes that particular sub-genre of 90’s FPS. feels like “south park libertarian” vibes
I will say though, the recent remaster of duke nukem 3D has a developer commentary mode and there’s one of them where one of the original devs says, regarding the pig cops: “yeah, this game should be popular right now because everyone hates cops again. we were kind of ahead our time… but personally, I respect the brave police officers who protect us every day.” and in that moment I was like okay maybe “boomer shooter” is appropriate after all

though it is maybe illustrative if this whole cultural debate is happening between people who have totally detached from new commercial releases?
I mean as far as I know I don’t think the shadow warrior reboot is considered a “boomer shooter” in any way. it seems like its entire purpose is to rebrand shadow warrior as a hip, millenial-friendly franchise. it seems to want to put behind itself the era of FPS that boomer shooters are trying to revive.
I find that very confusing because it’s obviously, obviously, ripping off doom 2016, I think the hope is that it’s better than eternal which was a step down from 2016, and at that time (so long ago!) the doom revival was praised for bringing back non-hitscan weapons and exactly the same thing that these kitsch-aesthetic “boomer shooters” are supposed to be doing well
it’s possible I’m being thick about something here I just really don’t like cultural re-mystification and that’s what I’m hearing
Are there any lo-fi throwback immersive sims? In my ahistorical plotting that’s the next step.

doom 2016 isn’t really a boomer shooter either though. like disregarding how it was marketed as a return to form or whatever it really plays nothing like doom or doom II. if it feels like anything id did in the 90s, it’s quake 2, and imo that’s really the worst thing I can say about it. it attempts to recreate the more action-oriented focus of the original doom games by pulling in completely new mechanics, and the level design never strays from the formula of putting you on a linear path between arena encounters, which is definitely not how any classic doom game worked. build engine games would have arena encounters but they generally were the entire concept of a level and still exceptions to their overall formula.
like I love Doom 2016 but I still feel disappointed that it isn’t actually a return to classic doom gameplay and level design. it’s great that they created something new that’s really fun and engaging but I resent the implication that it is in any way a throwback. it just isn’t. the fact that they felt the need to implement glory kills to keep players from turtling behind cover just proves that they did not fundamentally understand what makes doom great. doom was never about constant forward momentum, it’s just as much about exploration and suspense as it is intense combat. and it is markedly not setpiecey, and that’s actually one of the best things about it.

I fully endorse and will cheer for Ultrakill. It is so wonderfully indulgent game that isn’t complete yet but has just so much weird and fun stuff packed in. I think it mostly delivers on being an FPS that tries to be a character action game. I say mostly as I find the style score mechanic is mostly ignorable but it still kinda nice it’s there. It feels almost to easy to game depending on how much set up you find tolerable but also feels like it doesn’t work in natural gameplay when you get to the point where you are just making laps on the map to survive and take down lingering targets. The game sparks joy right there with God Hand to me and I choose to treasure that.

yeah theres already an emerging microgenre of this coming out of the same ecosystem, new blood is doing Gloomhaven which is more like thief and 3d realms is doing Graven which i think is more of a morrowind thing.
personally tho im only really looking forward to Peripetia, it feels like it has a more generative synthesis of ideas behind it. Peripeteia on Steam
theres also Wrought Flesh/Thouest Thee which i don’t really know what’s happening with but it seems like the dev is still posting logs occasionally.
