So maybe the answer to this is about using the surface maps to navigate toward places that should be light roots based on shrine locations above, which, again, is compelling in theory, but in practice just seems more like the typical open world game issue of spending more time looking at the minimap (etc) than actually watching the game itself… Idk
This one’s easy, disable the minimap! It’s the first thing I did.
As far as the depths go I clearly had two phases, the first where I was carefully advancing and using seeds to progress towards glimpses of lightroots (you can usually see several other lightroots from any given one), and the second one where I’d figured out a good build for a vertical takeoff plane and just flew from lightroot to lightroot, which still left some room for more careful exploration because planes didn’t always last to the next lightroot, also some bits of the map are genuine puzzles to unveil even of you’ve got a good idea of where the root is.
the depths are substantially more fun if you just build a hoverbike or similar flying vehicle and cruise your way through them imo
Finally resorted to a map to find the final shrine. Think I was missing it because one of those big petroglyphs or whatever was covering it when I’d switch between depths and overworld. Gonna finish it tonight.
The reward for getting all the lightroots is pretty lol.
The reward for all shrines is made by sickos for sickos
is it a monkey ball i could go for a monkey ball
More lore than gameplay I’m afraid
Confirming that is indeed possible to brute force one’s way back to the surface from the depths. After beating a boss for some rockets, I found a chasm that seemed to be headed straight up (the Great Plateau North Chasm, if anyone’s interested), and managed to cobble up a working combination of balloon, rockets and fans. It got me to the surface just as the balloon gave way, but fortunately, I was able to hang on to a non-toxic part of the wall, heal, and climb my way back up. And yeah, the game does not appear to like it; while it had no problem when I was ascending on my machine, it froze for a few moments while I was manually climbing.
there’s a specific z -axis threshold that’s the transition between surface and depths where the game will consistently hang when ascending (and sometimes while descending too, though this is generally more rare. certain building materials (I’m pretty sure stratum-specific ones like the hudson supply site items and weird bits you find in the construct factory) will despawn as you cross it. it can also be exploited for an item duplication glitch by firing a multishot bow with an item attached from side of the threshold to the other. when the extra items spawned by the multi-arrows reach the threshold, the arrows will despawn and the attached items will freeze in midair until you cross it, at which point they fall back down and can normally collected.
people have constructed elaborate platforms attached to stakes to catch these items but there is one fairly spoiler location where this isn’t necessary.
Third time’s the charm. I’m yet again investing not inconsiderable resources to get to this island, but this time I know I have enough hearts to go through this door. Oh, here we go, this–OH, COME ON!
at least there’s always a shrine right nearby when you sequence break like that so you can just warp back whenever
though honestly I’m not sure why they wouldn’t let you do that one out of order
Yeah, it’s surprising since there’s a bunch of other quest relics you can get ahead of time, complete with special case dialogue for the NPC when they realize you’ve found the treasure already and/or you’re wearing it right as they tell you about the quest.
i find the bluntness of the statement in this textbox so hilariously straightforward that i think it would’ve taken me out of the game if i had encountered it (i just went to this area like literally two hours ago for the first time after having checked the requisite story requirement) — it might as well have just said “you have not progressed far enough in the game and this is a late game item, go back from whence you came”
for some reason i find myself procrastinating the main quest, i think mainly because a lot of the fun for me is to find all the shrines and the costumes and i know once i’m done with the big bad i won’t have the energy to go back to hyrule to finish all the little things off… hence i’m kind of just farting about doing side quests and things even though i’m like 120+ hours in i think
i’m both disappointed and satisfied by the game, the biggest issue i have is that (as echoed elsewhere) it feels like an expansion pack of botw more than anything, and as such doesn’t really fix any of the deeper structural/gameplay/soundtrack issues i had with botw (aside from some fairly minor if welcome qol improvements)… also idk what’s the consensus here but i also found myself being quite jarred by the fact that none of the events of botw seem to be anything but offhandedly mentioned, despite totk seemingly taking place like what six months after botw at most? not to mention there are literally no traces of the towers, botw shrines or guardians anywhere on the map… it seems like they just did not want to bother in the slightest with any sort of continuity
once again confirming my suspicion that the best way to play this game is to have either never played BotW at all, or to have (like me) played it for about 5 minutes at a friends’ house when it came out and decided “yep, i pretty much feel like i get it, that’s enough”
with this now out and having played it i feel pretty confident in saying there’s very little to no point to play botw at all — between all the little qol improvements, more versatile and fun powers, generally better puzzles and (marginally) better dungeons, all the botw dlc content being included in the base game… might be worth still playing botw for the main story but even then it’s so thin on the ground that that’s hardly a motivation in and of itself, probably better to just watch the story cutscenes online or something
Having just done this part recently, I’m struggling to even think what the prerequisite is, unless it’s just “you must have completed X% of game to proceed”
Absolutely not, pure garbage, worst part of the game by far. Do not approach
DO NOT APPROACH
This was a fiddly questline.
you get a flimsy plot contrivance reason to go later in the main quest. it’s dumb
